Is there a reason that we don't track sales of The Strategic Preview issues on the Dragon and SR page at Dragon Index?

Frank's recent offer of all four of the issues got me wondering what they've sold for historically, but we don't seem to have any data listed on the site (except perhaps in the various Interesting Items threads)??

edit:  I found the listing at the Rares index page at Rares Index but think that this data could be expanded in the Dragon page, listing the individual issues, since some have certainly sold on eBay over the past several years.

Allan.

We have been tracking sales of Strategic Preview since 2005.  There have been 29 sales recorded.

There have been discussions on differentiating and expanding the information available for SP in the past, but we decided against doing it at the time.  One of the main reasons was that there weren't a lot of sales of #4 and #6 so the valuations would not be very accurate for those two.  We already have a similar challenge with some of the very rare items that have infrequent sales.

So, your suggested expansion of the data available for Strategic Preview could *technically* be done at any time, since we have detailed records of exactly what issues were sold.  Ultimately it comes down to the resources available to do so and whether there's enough data to warrant differentiating.  We'll see what the future holds.  Foul might want to chime in on this.

Some information that might be helpful for now.

Sales recorded per issue:

Issue
#3 (13)
#4 (4)
#5 (11)
#6 (1)

The single recorded copy of #6 sold for $4,059 in 2018.  It was in VG condition.  The latest recorded sale for #4 was for $1,477 in 2019.  It was also in VG condition.

The current aggregate valuation for the Strategic Previews would be fairly accurate for #3 and #5, with #4 likely selling for a higher amount than #3 or #5.  It's hard to say what #6 would sell for, since there has only been the one sale recorded.

I'm inclined to leave it as it is now -- a composite value for any issue -- for much of the same reasons dbartman lists above.  If we split up the values, #3 and #5 would end up pretty much where they are now.  #4 and #6 would be wildly inaccurate, both due to the length of time since the last sales and the scarcity of sales.   And then we'd be obligated to fudge those numbers manually to make them sane, which has its own pitfalls.

Not to mention it's actually a lot of work to add/remove items to the valuations system on the back-end.

Thanks guys, that makes perfect sense!

Would it be possible to add the sales tracking line item for the grouped StrPr issues to the Dragon index page, between the SRs and TDs?

Allan.

I can probably add it to the actual Strategic Preview index... as you know, despite the similarity in name to Strategic Review, it has nothing to do with either that or Dragon.  It's just an in-house newsletter.

Though it's a private sale I'll divulge the sale price within a week. fwiw
