Does anyone know off hand or remember seeing inserts (advertising or catalog or RPGA?) included with Dragon issues through subscription in the 80's that were not included in the normal retail sales of the issues? I only bought issues off the bookstore newstand back in the 80's, but I heard of mention of some inserts through subscription. I've gone through various issues at some game stores more recently, but I've never seen anything. Was there anything different about having a subscription compared to just buying the issues at the bookstore?

The price.

Cover price for Issue # 146 is $3.50 (June 1989) = $42.00

Subscription prices (from the insert in the same issue) :
$27.00 for 1 year;
$54.00 for 2 years;
$81.00 for 3 years.

(Applies to addresses in the U.S. and Canada only)

But when the issues were shipped to you, did the issues/mailers sometimes contain any extra advertising insert?

Could be very possible.  Finding out which magazines came with inserts is a big enough task.  Trying to determine if a subscription copy was different from a newstand even tougher.  However, this was the case with some Dungeon magazines where subscription copies had an extra adventure inside.
