I meandered over to the Wizards of the Coast website and found this....

http://www.wizards.com/dnd/Product.aspx?x=dnd/products/dndacc/253870000

Isn't this the first time since 2E that they've even touched something other than Living Greyhawk, Eberron or FR....?

I know Ravenloft and DL were done by companies other than WoTC, so I didn't count those...

160 pages and $29.95.  Woah!  That's  TPK to the tenth power! 8O  Oh, wait-a-minute!  The monster stats are one page each.

Still, I'd like of review of this puppy to see what they think. :?

I really don't have a problem with this. I think Dark Sun is an excellent campaign setting for those looking to get away from it all. Sandy beaches, palm trees, giant man-eating insects... :D

It makes sense for WotC to resurrect some of the classics. From what I understand 4e is more a tactical rpg than a pure rpg. And since many old school gamers have a connection to tactical board games or war games, this only makes sense.

At some point I need to pick up the 4e core rule books. I am more intrigued everytime I learn more about it.

On the flip side we have the 160-page Tomb of Horrors. That is just crazy. D&D modules are supposed to be read-and-play accessories for the over-worked DM. Reading and then operating a 160-page module just seems counter-intuitive.

And I could've bought these damn modules off the 1$ rack!!!

It seems that 4E appeals to 2E fans for whatever reason.  I couldn't stand the original setting, so no great loss to see WotC shill-mangle it further.

Yeah, they're really missing the mark on that one.  Nobody in the old-school crowd is going to be fooled into thinking this has anything to do with the original ToH except the title.  Nobody in the new-school cares.

If they are going to keep on nostalgia marketing, they should be remaking settings/modules from Planescape, Spelljammer, Hollow World, Al-Qadim, Birthright, because the 2E kids have grown up.

I think Dark Sun would work particularly well with 4E...that's the setting that was so tough YOU COULDNT START OUT AT 1ST LEVEL!!!!!  :D

I don't know that Al Qadim or the rest really work with the tactical aspects of 4E....maybe Spelljammer, since you could have all those ship combats in space.

Seems to be doing quite well on the continent from what I'm told, albeit a few people I know are being rather armtwisted into such a move, too... :?

Not just that, but to tap into new markets, too, if they're smart. Spelljammer would appear to be an obvious choice in that context, given that the largest emerging market for anything with SF cross-appeal is pretty clear: the circulation for http://sfw.com.cn/ 's 'zine already being ten times anything in the US (if you scroll right down, there's already a slinky link already in there for cross-marketing D&D and, to be honest, /their/ .cn website has a greater regard for D&D history than the US one, with a long history/background series visible from the top-level on http://dnd.zongheng.com/guide/guide_his ... tory.shtml )

(I'll just say "after my time" (for D&D) and leave it at that ;))

Seems to be that ToH is one of the few "common points" (at least to 3e new school) from rpg.net discussions. And I wouldn't put any money at all on grognards not buying a 4e version "just because". :)
Would be a pity if they haven't carried forward any of the pointers on the rather thoughtful (for 4e) article on http://www.wizards.com/DnD/Article.aspx ... /20080530a , though.

Rich Baker talks 4E Dark Sun on his WoTC blog page. If anyone can make Dark Sun work - and work well - in 4E, I'd say Rich is just the guy to do it.

Now if he ever convinces the suits to make 4E Birthright, that is something I'd buy ;)

You may be correct, but I never liked 2e (sorry Mike).

...and a shameless plug must follow...
I would love to see a Hollow World setting. And for those of you who have longed for a real module that dips into the Hollow World stay tuned for an upcoming epic scale Pacesetter Games & Simulations super module - The Goblin Crown. You get Blackmoor and Hollow World in one massive adventure.

You're right, and I should amend my initial statement as it's not necessarily about the 2E rules at all.

It's more accurate to say 4E seems to appeal to those who enjoy TSR products published circa 1989-1997, from the release of 2E until the purchase by WotC.  (There are few I care for from that period, with the exception of the Carl Sargent GH material).

The 2E core rules themselves are not terribly different; it is the fondness for the various settings/supplements of the 1990s explosion that defines someone a"2E fan" in my mind.

I'll admit to being intrigued by a 160-page Tomb of Horrors.

Of course, I'll also admit to liking Rush, so I'm not sure I've really proved anything there.

The political pundit or the band from Canada?   :D  :D

Rush is the best band ever. Rush albums formed many a soundtrack to my 80's AD&D experiences.

If you believe that ADVANCED DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS is a game worth playing, you will certainly find it doubly so if you play well.

RUSH and AD&D...pretty much the same thing, right?

In my gaming group, there were two sets of conflicting opinions about RUSH:

Group A)  Those who believed RUSH to be the most awesome band in the world.

Group B)  Those who believed that group A was not enthusiastic enough about RUSH.

I am definitely a group A person.

I've seen them in concert a few times, and the fact that after 40 years later their music still sounds great.   :D

Wow, really?  Given the option I'd actually rather play the 4E 160-page Tomb of Horrors.  (Though I wouldn't be surprised if one of the "horrors" consists of being forced to listen to Rush...)

I'm with Deimos on this one - RUSH makes my ears bleed.
