Our very own misterspock (of interesting items on ebay thread fame) has single-handedly made my year.
As some of you may know, I have carped about the fact that I have a bunch of stuff (mostly gaming and numerous AD&D and D&D scenarios) that I wrote more than 15 years ago. Anyway, they are on a 44mb syquest cartridge that I had no way of accessing. The only way to get the files was for me to send the cartridge to a vendor of some sort and pay through the freaking nose to get the files.
Well, misterspock sent me a scsi card so I could connect my ancient syquest drive to my not so new Apple G4 (you see when apple came out with G3 and up, they stopped including scsi connectors - everything was usb at the time or firewire). He even included the software driver and complete instructions.
Well it all arrived the other day and I started the process. I finished the hardware and software install and crossed my fingers...
And it all worked perfectly!!!!!!!!!!!

Damn near 20 year old tech loaded onto my 10 year old G4 mac! Try that with your PC!
I now have renewed access to eight complete scenarios for Pacesetter Games & Simulations that I previously thought were lost for all time. Yes, I remember them, but to rewrite them would have been next to impossible. Also, I found two that I completely forgot about.
To make this long story come to and end, I owe misterspock a huge thank you and more.
I just wanted everyone to know how he took it upon himself to gather the correct stuff (which has long since disappeared from any retail source) and made sure it work!

Yay misterspock!

While we're on the topic of ancient technology and D&D writings: does anyone know of a way to recover files from 5.25" floppies written on a Commodore 128 using some old word processing program I can't remember (perhaps WordPro or WordStar?).

http://www.retrofloppy.com/index.html is a place I've been pointed to before, but I haven't checked out others that may be cheaper, perhaps. (I found http://www.commodore128.org/ as well, but haven't really dug in there either).

Allan, if you can use a service like RetroFloppy to get the files for you then might be able to use an emulator such as:

I never used WordStar but you might be able to export files out as either text or as an early WordPerfect version.

There is also the WordStar Resource Site you might want to look at.

I had some old files once on a 3" (if I remember correctly) set of discs that had been produced on one of the early word processor only style computers. Possibly an Amstrad?? I recall it had the infamous light green text on a dark green screen! :lol:

I think I printed all my notes off them at some point (as they were the ramblings of a young teen really) but I know I still have those discs in the hope one day I can look at the material again.

I seem to remember having some marvellous ideas jotted down on there...
