I spent nearly every weekend combing the local Half Price Books (we have 5 in the immediate area and several more within a couple hours).

At the Bethel Rd. location in Columbus I purchased a Near Mint shrinkwrapped Kara-Tur: The Eastern Realms for $27. I was very excited! I'm sorry to let the collectors here know that I de-shrinked and read it as soon as I got home!  :?

There were piles and piles of shrinkwrapped RPG box sets and board games from 1980s vintage. Since I only collect D&D, I was not interested, but this hoard is someone's wet dream. There were several shrinked I.C.E. box sets, lots of shrinked City State of the Invincible Overlord boxes, a bunch of MERP stuff, and several James Bond 007 RPG box sets from the early 80s. Lots of very rare-looking and old games there (all shrink wrapped). If anyone's even remotely in the area, it might be worth the drive to Columbus to check this stuff out.

At another location in Westerville, I got a very nice 1983 World of Greyhawk box with near-mint contents but a crushed box for only $13. Not as nice as the Kara-Tur, but I'm quite happy today with both!

I collect ALL pre 1983-ish TSR products.

Any old TSR board games (Divine Right, Fight in the Skies, Etc)?

You know it maybe good to go back there and make a list, because people will make it worth while if you pick things up from there.

You could put some of the intere$ting items on hold, check the completed and in-progress eBay auctions, check the Amazon prices, and verify that they are worth buying at HPB's price.

You had better do it quickly, because you just posted on a public forum, and anyone can pop in tonight or tomorrow and buy them before you do.

[Edit: So if I start driving now, I can arrive at dawn, catch a few winks in the car, hit the HPBs, and return home after nightfall.  It might be profitable from a collecting and reselling perspective . . .  8O ]

Yeah, post a list if you don't mind the trouble. Like SG said, I'm sure a few people (myself included) wouldn't mind paying you on an escalating scale for the trouble of buying and shipping them. *Wonders what the drive would be like from GA*

when i lived in ohio it was my weekend ritual to stop by every HPB in the area.  usually found something interesting in at least one of them.  hmm... i'll be back in ohio around thanksgiving....

So who is honest and willing to make a tour of the shops to purchase for me?
I calculated the trip time from Atlanta as well as Hartford, CT where I will be for Thanksgiving.. 10 hours from both cities.   8O

Cost prohibitive unless they will hold items for purchase. Does anyone know?

Most of the ones I've called will hold an item for a day or two but not much longer than that. I guess it all depends too. If you're a regular at the place and they know you, they'll have a tendency of letting you get away with more....on the other hand, if they don't know you at all or you just call out of the blue, they might not hold it at all. Just my 2 cents.
