AD&D's very existence blew me away.  Wow, rules for a game that can be anything!

I would say the fact that there so so few rulebooks...

Whats the point for rolling for everything, weather, rain.. the fact there were so few special abilities and rules... everything was new...

The settings for me...course I started with BECMI D&D then 2nd edition AD&D.  It was fun to DM some of those settings as well as play in a couple of them.

I'd agree, I started out on AD&D, so imagination and ability to create a whole world, people and PC's was just incredible.
But I found nothing better than drawing a 'dungeon' and filling it with monsters etc.

I have to say it was the monster manual.

The fun pictures, the idea of fighting monsters.

The Art, the Mood and the Aesthetic... and that it was the first of it's kind.

the story and plot content was not intrinsically unique as that part can be brought by the players and is not mutually exclusive to TSR/AD&D...

The way the game works.

By the way, Ravenloft and That setting which cannot be spoken would not be my choice as examples...

And I could've bought these damn modules off the 1$ rack!!!

I chose "The Art". Some of your other options are so wrong-headed :) I couldn't select them. For instance, there is no "THAC0" in 1st ed. AD&D. Ah, and I second the feeling about unspeakable campaign settings.

Looking back on it -- I honestly have no idea.  Probably the funny-shaped dice, but that's not exactly unique to 1E.

The fact that my mother (and her hippie friends) taught me how to play...and it was an escape from the mundane into a world where anything was possible.

If you believe that ADVANCED DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS is a game worth playing, you will certainly find it doubly so if you play well.

Go and kill strange creatures and take their stuff. What's not to like?  :D
From the perspective of a 10-11 year old, that's all one needed.

Try as might, I can't isolate just one aspect of it that drew me in.  There just isn't one "thing" that did it for me.  The whole concept just blew me away back then.  And still does today, to be honest.

Creating a fantasy world and having it come to life when other people went there.

"THAC0" did exist in the 1st edition.  The acronym didn't officially take over for the combat tables until the 2nd edition, thus people associate it with the 2nd edition only.  I can't recall seeing it referenced directly in the books until later though.

I do like the art as well, it wasn't as fancy as the art out there now but that's what appealed to me.  Still, the game mechanics, despite the flaws are what I enjoy the most.
