I received the following letter from a seller in regards to a recent eBay transaction.  It is not for a D&D collectible, in fact...but pretend it is.  I'm just curious to know how you would respond.

Dear deimos3428,

I do apologize for every inconvenience as we were not able to ship out this eBay order because we were not able to locate this item in our warehouse. Unfortunately, we do not have any more of this product available in stock.

If you would like us to exchange this item for another unit that we have in stock of comparable price we would be happy to do so. Please check our online store and let me know if there is a product you would like as a replacement. Otherwise, we can certainly cancel this transaction and issue you a full refund back to your PayPal account before the end of today.

That has happened to me, and I find it loathsome to sell something one does not even have, so I have asked for a refund and then placed that seller in the "never buy from again" list as it is a complete and utter waste of time and resources, not to mention any sentimental value that might have been attached to think you were getting something, finally, after whatever period of time it may have been.

Hi,

umm, speaking from the point of view of a seller with a large catalogue, this does sometimes happen.

We have more than 60,000 items for sale, and we do occasionally mislay something, or count wrongly for our database.

Happens, unfortunately.

Cheers,
Malc

Unless you feel like the seller realized too late that you were getting a screaming deal, and is trying to pull a fast one, then, yeah, this can happen.  Cancel / refund and be done with it.

I have had this happen a couple times.  Once I am sure that the seller didn't like the final price so they pulled it - they then relisted it later after they "found it again" the following week.

Although sometimes, it is very legit.  I remember grodog winning an auction for Thieves Quarter but I had bought the item from the seller's online store months before (and had already posted it on the Tome).

In your case, I would check their catalog and look for an item that is about 10-20% more than what the item you purchased was worth (and that you like) and see if they would send you that one (at no additional cost).

Thanks guys.  As it turns out, it's not the canceled transaction that bothers me so much as the way Paypal handles refunds.  I have to wait 6-8 days to get the money, it's on "Temporary Hold".

Regardless, I'd still go for the refund.  Been through it a few times as well.  :D

Doesn't happen so often on eBay but is very common with online bookshops - around 1 in 3 purchases made here, give-or-take.

For me, that would depend on how high value, how easily obtainable elsewhere, whether the seller had anything else in stock I wanted (that cheeky "ask" for something worth 10-20% more might be in the frame depending on what the "missed" purchase was), etc.
Having hundreds/thousands of items on sale at once shouldn't be a valid excuse, but mistakes still do happen - if even by the seller, should there be others involved, too. (Not mentioning names of those at Troll & Toad, but not part /of/ Troll & Toad, in that particular context...).

Hoping that money gets back sooner rather than later, given your follow-up, above...

The Seller seems nice ... but I think it is pretty slack service when it happens. I have noticed some Sellers are listing the same stock on more than one site .. so occasionally they must double sell things.
