I am now officially "Collecting" the game...

Well, I've been a player for years (early 80's) and although I do have a fondness for 1e D&D (I started off with Basic, and then played AD&D until the early 90's), I now play 4e because it is the game of choice in the area and what my oldest son's are playing with their friends.

But up until this past week, I never considered myself a 'collector'. I have almost got a complete collection of 1e books and modules and I started organizing them, making a check list and even ordered protective bags and card back inserts for them.

I thought I had all but about 6-12 1e modules, and now that I've done an inventory, I realize it is more like 12-18 that I am in need of, with a good 15-20 I'd like to replace due to wear and tear. So look out! I'm now officially a collector.

It may seem odd to some of you, but it is quite a different way to look at things. For the most part I held onto my 1e stuff over the years because I really love reading it and remember the many adventures I had back in my High School years. Over the years I picked up odds and ends that I knew I was missing and now, well... here I am.

Welcome! And think about sneaking in a 1E game every once in awhile....I think your kid and friends wil be pleasantly surprised.....

Probably not a bad idea. I think my last official 1e game was in 1991... so it has been awhile.

I am glad I held onto my books and modules though.

Welcome.
I agree with Mike.
Sneak in a OD&D game occasionally.
You might be surprised.

Just make sure the young folks know there wont be any Fire Breathing Half Red Dragon/Half Orc Paladin/Thief/Mage PCs allowed.

And good luck explaining the bass ackwards A/C and low stats for Abilities.... :wink:

Take your time. Many of us have found that the hunt is as fun, or more fun, than enjoying/reading the module/book/box-set/whatever. Impatience can also lead you to buy something you don't have in so-so condition only to be disappointed so you have to buy it all over again and sell the first copy.

However, you may be on of those collectors like me, who is not interested in shrink wrap(close your ears Smarmy!) and near mint copies. I personally like getting items in fine condition and paying 1/2 the price. My G1-3 is somewhat marked up(by me) but those marked up memories are just fine.

I also want to say thank you for sharing your enthusiasm on this forum. We've all come to that point in our lives when the light came on. We realized we really do love this game and want to not only preserve an amazing chapter in our lives but keep creating unforgettable memories.

Truth is worth finding and life is too short to work for money.

Thanks for that reply and that is exactly right. D&D has some awesome memories for me, and is making new ones all the time with new games I play with my two oldest sons (my oldest is now older than I was when I first started playing, so that is kind of cool).

I don't want/need mint in shrink wrap modules by any means. A well played with copy is fine by me. I actually just got one a few weeks back and when I opened it up it had all of the original player's notes and hand drawn graph paper maps still in it. So that was really cool.

I want to replace the ones I have with covers ripped down the spine and pages missing though, but a good condition copy not missing pages/maps or torn is fine by me. That is how I remember them being for the most part anyways.
