If a "line" makes up a single item, perhaps the R-Series RPGA modules would be an excellent present.

I believe R1-4 would run you about $1K in nice condition.

For $1000 I would probably look into commissioning something from Roslof or something like that.

I notice on our Acaeum site valuations, we still the 3rd print Woodgrain valued at under $1,000. Is this still feasible or are these prices a little outdated?

I'd blow $1000 of a Black Foldered version of Palace of the Vampire Queen, of a first print Dwarven Glory. After that, I'd be looking at manuscripts or unique items. The RPGA series of modules still elude me, and the Mayfair Games Role Aids Folders (Beastmaker Mountain, Nanorien Stones, Fez I Valley of Trees, Kobold Hall, and Blasted Lands) are a great buy and harder to assemble than most, particularily if you can secure yellow or brown folders. The run of the mill TSR stuff doesn't interest me at all.

You could always buy a stack of CZ:UW boxed sets. As far as investments go, they'll do better than anything published in the last 10 years.
That UK Cover Art piece just sold was a helluva sweet deal too.

Agree. The box lids make great kitty litter trays, and the artwork on the booklets inside can be neatly cut out and pasted into other books - brightens up the dullest work folder.

Personally "." is fine, but "mbassoc2003" better - sounded like it had a history, perhaps even gravitas.  

There are a lot of good choices above.

I take it this is a one time thing, meaning it is not likely that you will be able to scratch together that amount again for a long while.
That said (despite the possible investment value) I would stay away from anything modern.
Including the CZ: Upper Works.
At +/- $200 they are not a good value anymore, the investment value time frame has long passed for those (IMO).
The time to snap up a dozen of those was when they were selling for $40, or at face value from the publisher.
I think they are topped out and can only go down.
(Just my opinion and did not want to create an argument, and yes I could be VERY Wrong on this)

My First choice would be a unique commissioned art piece as stated several times above.

Second Choice a Black Foldered PotVQ, or Dwarven Glory or some other First Print Rarity.

Third Choice a 3rd Print Woodie which should be easily obtained for well under 1K (Unless it was some famous dudes woodie), and as also stated above, a full set of Strategic Reviews on the side.
