Does anyone get the impression that the Lou Zocchi organisation just ran these off on their photocopier when they needed more stock? Can any of these things be considered to be genuine? I can see that the 1st print back folder, and the 2nd print non-black folder can be differentiated from photocopies by virtue of the quality of the printing, the paper and the grey halftone grid. And the 4th printing (or whatever) and beyond can be differentiated by their binding, card cover etc., and all can be said to be legit copies of PoVQ. But surely photocopies CANNOT be legitimate copies of this module. Otherwise we should be listing the orange cover spiral bound photocopy as the original 1st print alpha! There are way too many photocopies of this module, and photocopies were available with this exact cover in conventions in the UK as late as the early 90's. They were selling for £20 a pop. Everyone knows these are bogus, but they have become 'legit' by virtue of time between when they were originally ripped off, and now, and by sites such as this, and ToT giving them legitimate status.

I wouldn't say that the Tome of Treasures exactle legitimizes these copies:

I agree, ToT looks like it was trying to get to the bottom of it.

No. What I meant was, we don't actively 'out' the photocopying of legitimate items. Be that photocopying them yesterday, last year or a decade ago. They are not exactly legitimate products.

Now I accept that with tourneys and fanzines, that was the accepted means of doing things, and certainly the only economic way of a lot of things getting printed in the early 80's. But there is a difference between a xeroxed book bound and stapled that was always a xeroxed book bound and stapled, and a photocopy of an otherwise legitimate product.

These 3rd print PoVQs were hawked around conventions for the best part of a decade, and sold as copies of an otherwise unavailable product. But with the comming of the internet, all of a sudden they are a fabled 3rd printing which is bollocks. And I'm not saying these are the product of any one individual. Indeed, Mr Zocchi went so far as to put his name on the ones he had manufactured. But they were certainly photocopied here in the UK also, and probably in a dozen other games shops accross the US.

And if they are 'legitimate real printings' than what's happened to the orange cover PoVQ from Mathias' old site. It must surely be the rarest of all PoVQs. A photocopy with a simple typed cover spiral bound.

IMO, the third print is a photocopy spree that ran rampage through the US and the UK. None of them are real. I do recall Pete Kerestan visiting this site in the dim and distant past. I wonder if he could confirm the legitimacy of the 3rd print, and who he gave permission to manufacture them to?

But without any real proof that these photocopies are real PoVQ's they are fakes. They may be 10 year old fakes, but a fake is a fake.

I tried to do that last year when it was brought up on the Tome.  I got a response which I posted part way down on the ToT thread but it is vague and doesn't sound very reliable.

I think it is safe to say that copies were produced later on but the big question is if they were produced with permission - this would at least legitimize them.  Also, finding out when they were produced would be useful.  Lou might be the better one to talk to?

Well, Lou wasn't responsible for the one's sold in the UK. These were photocopied here in the UK by a number of mass mail order resellers and sold through mailing lists and on stalls in convention halls. They all had the exact same cover, and were all probably photocopied from the same copy someone bought in the US, maybe from Lou. But I'd be willing to bet that any UK photocopy PoVQ was produced sometime between 1984 (the peak of UK D&D) and 1992 (by which time D&D was virtually dead).
Aneoth wrote:Glad I read this thread.

Were you gonna bid?

Now, if it came with a dated and signed certificate from Lou saying 'I certify that this is a genuine Zocchi photocopy" then I may be willing to believe it was produced in 1980, but as it is, I would have top presume it was published some 20 years after the module was released. No amount of froth on websites about the history of this module can make this type of PoVQ real.

If ever there were a time for Kynan to revisit, now would be it. His expertise in this matter are probably unparalleled.

Don't get this?
I for one have never had any issue with TFM. Believe he had a lot to contribute to The Acaeum, but seems to have been pushed away for whatever reason by others. Similarly, there have been a number of collectors who not longer visit us, but who are active elsewhere.

As regards to these 'Zocchi' prints, Zocchi is certainly not responsible for those that surface elsewhere in the world. This so called '3rd printing' was rife in conventions in the UK, and from what I hear, in the US also, throughout the 80's and 90's. It was the standard copy available from all mailorder resellers, and you can't tell me TSR were disributing these worldwide on behalf of WW. And there's no way in hell WW had their own worldwide distribution deals. No, these were the first mass produced fakes.

All seems very suspicious to me.
Does this make PoVQ the first Gamescience reprint?

And therefor, presumably Games Workshop were responsible for the distribution of all the PoVQs in the UK, right up and into the 90's? I remember sellers at a Con' in Edinburgh as late as 1991 selling 3rd print PoVQs for £20 a pop. Didn't know what it was all about back then. I was into Battletech at the time, but I remember they had a couple of donzen in ziplock baggies, and I remember thinking I couldn't believe they were still trying to sell those. It was a running joke. They had them every year.

So maybe they bought boxloads from Games Workshop who shipped boxloads over from Zocchi, and there weren't any Zocchi labels on them (or GW removed them).

Either way, there's no way of telling the vast majority of fakes from the few remaining vaguely legitimate copies. Anyone can print a Zocchi label if you were gonna use the Zocchie label as the 'hey look it must be real'.

agree need to discount possible genuine overstock as easy to imagine not many willing in late 1970s to pay $$$$ for handful of photocopied sheets with not so good review. or else were meant as temporary only and shelved in favor of digest version?? or even to cover later but fell by wayside
do you know anyone with copy bought later to compare + are you sure did not have zocchi label that other copy from edinburgh did have

no doubt more difficult than usual but did people realise 20 years ago + bother to add that detail. best to stick to black folder if unsure ^^

nice one on battletech btw :) :)

There is an Edinburgh sourced copy of PoVQ with a Zocchi label on it, known to the community!? Where? What's it's provenance? No, I don't know of any, although there are probably many gamers in the Edinburgh area, and no doubt many ex-members of the Edinburgh University gaming fraternity that picked up copies at the Con's. It was Edinburgh Uni' that hosted them back then.

Battletech - Unfortunately the game has changes so much from the original 3025-55 that it now sucks. And the community online is shite too, but most of my old compadre's are listed within the ranks of the MFUK league, although sadly I am not. I was not THAT serious at the time.

Maybe in the early to mid '80s. Not plausable IMO for LZ to have supplied the stock that was available at con's in the late '80s and early '90s. If so, that would beg the question why LZ not still selling them and wht NKG hasn't got box loads.

IMO, UK 3rd print PoVQs are fakes, and a large proportion of US 3rd print PoVQs are fakes. They may vary in photocopy date between the mid 80's through to the mid '90s, and some may even have been photocopies more recently. Either way, they are still fake.

A black foldered version, or a folderless with the correcxt halftone printing and paper, or the digest versions are the only validated legitimate printings of PoVQ. I'd be in the market for a black foldered PoVQ at the right price, or a good clean digest, but I wouldn't touch a 3rd print even if it were going for $10.

Where did this one come from? It's not a 3rd print. Looks like a bastard 2nd print to me, or a coverless 3rd print if the 3rd print has a yellow title sheet after the doodle page.

I don't quite get how the grid can jump in some prints from being aligned with the rooms to not being aligned with the rooms in other prints? In order for that to occur, the printing of the grid has to be done seperate from the printing of the room layout. Or the photocopies are made from incorrectly printed originals (read scrapped stock). The photocopier cannot mis align the grid of it's own accord. It just prints what it sees. Unless someone knows something about the digital optical interpretation of halftone greys that I don't?

LZ from wd#4 but supplier annotation dropped later across board
