DDM appears to be getting bigger and bigger.  Plus, collecting the minis can be quite expensive which tells me that the game is healthy and probably growing.  The minis do look nice, and I like that they are pre-painted, but the scale definitely appears to be heroic despite the claim they're 25mm.

The collecting side of me is quite interested in DDM, plus there is a healthy eBay market to offload singles and seconds, but I've decided to just not go there for now.  I have three huge tackle boxes of Mage Knight stuff that I want to keep and my lead/pewter minis are keeping me pretty entertained for now.

This is another thread, but I wonder how this offshoot will impact our interests?

I agree, but if this keeps people involved and interested in D&D (even though it is fundamentally a different game), I'll put up with the annoyance.  Let's face it, it's possible that our brand of D&D is fading, but this brand of D&D may keep it from fading or even increase its exposure.  Personally, I think this kind of D&D helps us more than computer game D&D (like WOW) which I thought was going to be our only future. I think it's a mixed bag at best but there are certainly worse alternatives.  

Oddly enough, it seems to have escaped notice here that the official support for minis ended with the last release and D&Dxp will be the last officially sanctioned tournament.

Its not odd if one simply doesn't give a damn.

Yeah, some do. They call it preference. Me, it ends where I no longer get enjoyment from the material. That happened about 2 years into d20, right before the 3.5 "split." What I have read of 4e, I have not liked, and I have never cared for miniatures games, with one exception: Battletech, and that just because it had so many dice to roll around.

Hey mention them all you like.  personally I am a huge miniatures fan (Mostly Warhammer, Reaper and other non-pre-painted minis).  I have over 10,000 of the little buggers invading my house.

Video games and pre-painted plastic minis are here to stay and a very important part of keeping RPG's in the spotlight.

I was told about the cancellation of the D&D mini game, turns out it was really not a great game anyway and very few people actuall played it.

Nothing wrong with video games at all.  You would be hard pressed to find anyone here that hasnt played and enjoyed a computer or console based RPG style game at least once.  In fact I am currently smack dab in the middle of Neverwinter Nights 2.  As fun as it is, for me it doesnt come close to the real deal.

The events require an RPGA members character to level-up to the appropriate level to play in that event. I have a 1st level dwarven fighter, and can play him in the Level 1-3 events. He would be smashed into a pulp if I played him in a higher level event.

So my advice would be to refund your tickets when you just get there, and try to get into an entry-level event (levels 1-3). Bring your scotch, and some for me...  

Winter Fantasy was a convention started in the mid-80's? specifically for the members of the RPGA. I remember it in the late 80's held in Milwaukee, before being moved to Fort Wayne, Indiana in the mid to late 90's. Then some dumbass... er um... genius.. decided to move it east coast because people weren't paying enough for a hotel room and food  

To do so, they decided to put the event a few blocks from the Pentagon so it was nice and expensive for everyone ($700.00 for a weekend for a hotel room at the Hyatt... my ass...). If I didn't have a friend that lived in DC, I would not have attended. IMHO, attendance was much lower in DC than when they held the events in Fort Wayne.

To my suprise, they're bringing it back to Fort Wayne, Indiana, where a room for $40.00 a night is easily possible to get (just slightly away from the convention center).

I'm not a big fan of 4th Ed., but I will play if I have a slot open.

As an aside, I LOVE the new miniatures as well (especially the dragons). I need the Ancient Red Dragon btw (at a reasonable price please...).

Nothing wrong with miniature gaming. I got my start that way. Our high school had a wargaming club that only played D&D occassionally.

We played naval miniatures and micro armor (WWII tank battles). Awesome battles. They would actually clear out the cafeteria tables and behold - an ocean!
