I added a wonderful new feature to the forums today: certain acronyms, when you hover your mouse over them, will show a popup explanation.  The systemwide acronyms I've currently added will be identified by a dashed line under them, such as:

DMG

There's nothing you need to do differently when posting your message; the system will automatically underline the acronym and show the popup on mouseover.

If you want to create your own acronym in a message, use the "acronym" BBCode as follows:
Code:
[acronym="Bulletin Board System"]BBS[/acronym]

Which will then show the following (mouseover to see it):

[acronym="Bulletin Board System"]BBS[/acronym]

You can, of course, make any text you like into an "acronym", such as your own name:

Foul

Enjoy!

Is this a php3 feature? If so, I know some places that need it! :)

Thanks. Neat function.

I don't believe it is (phpBB3).  We're running phpBB2 here, and it's an add-on.

One limitation I should mention: the acronym system is case sensitive, so for example "dmg" will not pull up, only "DMG".  Unfortunately, there's no way to add case variations, so I had to just pick the most commonly used.

If you want to use it somewhere else and they don't have it added in, you can still do it if they have HTML enabled on their posts.

Use <acronym title="text">what you want to acronym</acronym>

If they don't enable HTML, then you're [acronym="Shit Outta Luck"]SOL[/acronym]. ;)

Only when someone manages to make [acronym="5000 posts"]Grandstanding Collector[/acronym] solely through acronym posts.

I'm just trying to ignore it, hoping it will go away (Though Blackmoor deserves points for getting acronyms in for FF & TG :D )

Scott---

Are the acronyms stored only in that post, or does the site permanently recognize them and store them in a db or somesuch??

[acronym="Is there a limit? By which I mean, is there a limit to the amount of information you can post in the little pop up box? If there were, one would imagine it would be governed by some hexidecimal setting somewhere, so if this message conna cut out a 255 characters? All that aside, one also wonders if you can insert paragraphs and other page stout information into this section. It does pave the way for a really annoying way of structuring mesages on a board. Could you imagine having to read the messages in little pop up windows, while having to keep your mouse hovering over the acronym? Especially seeing as it disappears after five seconds. "]ITAL[/acronym]?
Well there ya go. Answered my own question. Still laughing, but no longer [acronym="Rolling on floor laughing my ass off"]ROFLMAO[/acronym].

You can always just quote that message and read it without having to keep moving the mouse over. :wink:

Nope, it's only for that post.  The forum-wide acronyms are set by me.
