I remember some talk about D&D Tile sets. What are they? I haven't been following the wotc D&D releases.

Are these  the D&D tiles that you are asking about?

Free RPG Day 2008 had a 4e adventure, mini, and tile.  I didn't open any of them, so I can't tell you if the tile was double-sided or was two thin tiles shrinkwrapped together.

Are those the tiles that you remember, or were they some other WotC or D&D tiles?

I think it is the D&D tile sets. I saw something about lost caverns and it looked fairly new. I know that a lot of the 4e stuff and even 3e stuff uses maps and minis as key elements.

Has WOTC produced a recent series of cardboard tiles?

Yes, if you go to WotC's website and check out the list of recent releases, you will see all of the sets that are (or were) available.  I believe six sets were produced for 3.5 edition, one so far for 4th edition, and 3 more are scheduled for release for 4th edition before June of 2009.
