Hi there! I am just wondering if something had been already raised in the past (I remember a ranking of all the official TSR modules, but nothing with a wider scope)...

I am basically asking you:

1) What is the best (one, at least two) adventure you've ever played/DMed?

2) Where is it from?

3) (optional) What is the reason that lead you to prefer your choice?

Thanks!

Just to start: my choice goes to 2 linked modules for Planescape I found in an Italian site (absolutely not official!) which were largely better than any other adventure I have ever read/played/DMed! The site (if still up) is "Terre Esterne" (translation of Outlands)! I love these tow for the great attention to the setting: it was kindof a version of the pc game Torment for D&D 3E! Absolutely wonderful!

cheers

as a player, i have to say i have 3 TSR ones that really stand out. the G series was amazing. Q1 for me was just fab - they DM was great and it led to a fantastic game and of course my other old favorite U1. one of the best low level games i ever participated in. was a ton of fun and the first game i was in as a player, when my daughter also played.

as a DM, without any doubt, i would say Tegel Manor at GenCon last year. had we played that some more, i think it would have turned out to be one of the best games all of us would have been involved in. the role-play was superb and was a ton of fun all round. for me, thats what every game should be about.

the main reason for Tegel, is that it was a very old-school bare bones adventure, which just leaves everything to the DMs imagination, so you can mould it to the way the players are and can lead to a great game.

i have other favorites too, but these prb stand out far more than most others do.

Al

Tegel Manor is a favorite of mine.  I was "introduced" to it by Al last year at Gencon.  I immediately went on a collecting binge to get all the printings for this adventure.

My DM runs his own stuff and it is fantastic, so in that regard, alot of my favorites are home brew.

As a player, the Giants and Drow Series, though if we had the time to play more often, then I think Mikes Game would be up there too.
It has been a lot of fun so far, but we seldom get together.

As a DM, a game I created for On-Line message board play.
It was really more of a campaign than a single adventure.
It was called DarkBlade and we played it for about two years before I had to end it due to real life concerns.... :(

The beginning of the game involved Two Rival thieves guilds who were fighting for control of a city. A lot of political (City Councils and Law enforcement offcials) behind the back rangling went on as well. It also involved an unusual sword of course..... 8)

I have never played adventure modules. I always made up my own adventures. Usually I took some ideas from adventure modules now and then, but no more than I did from books/movies/songs.

For me, a months-long home brew epic in the late '70s...

...which I trimmed down to become R3 and R4.

I voted for Official TSR product because of the G series, but it was a toss up between them and Judges Guild's Dark Tower.  :D

For me the best adventures have always been official TSR modules.  I have always considered G1, WG4, and the original Ravenloft to be the benchmarks of quality that other adventures strive to attain.  The writing, artwork, and ease of use all tie in together to make them the classics that most people love.

actually john, youre right there. i had forgotten that module as well!

the original ravenloft is amongst one of THE best adventures. a pure DMs dream. its great for building atmosphere. i "almost" took that to GenCon last year, as i thought it would have made a great game there, alas i did Tegel in the end, due to others being more unfamiliar with it.

Dark Tower all the way for me! The Desert of Desolation series is my favorite from TSR

In short it'll be 4e and maybe 2008

I voted for Non TSR due to playing in a Tegel Manor game run years ago at GenCon.  For me as a DM it would have been home brew, but then it all really comes down to the group playing in that regard.

I'll have to be boring and vote for the G1,2,3 then D1,2,3 then Q1. Maybe that was the heyday of my youthful playing. I Dm'ed and it kept a great group entertained for ages. Even Q1, I did the alternate worlds thing and created some interesting side adventures, which everyone loved.

Sometimes, if you've played the modules, it's hard to separate the module quality from the quality of the GMing and playing.

In other words - if you played 2 equal quality modules, but 1 with a bad DM and players and the other with a talented GM and fun players, you're going to be a lot more favorable to the latter.

So, I find my favorites are mostly the ones we played towards the end of my playing days.  But I'm also just not super-crazy about many early adventures, either.  Too much illogical placement, "monster-hoteling", and hack-and-slash.

DDA1,2 Thyatis - political intrigue
I12 Egg of the Phoenix
L2 Assassin's Knot - 1st mystery module I ever encountered
N1 Cult of the Reptile God - another great town adventure (partly anyway, won't give away anything else)
U1 Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh

I went for the homebrew I'm affraid, but there are three that really stick in my mind from the 20+ years I played.

First off was our first venturings into B2 Keep on the Borderlands. A friend got the basic set for Christmas '78/'79 and the experst set a month or so later, and it all began there. We bought White Dwarf 'cos you couldn't buy Dragon, and got floor plans and miniatures by mail order. But the first memorable excursions were into B2.

Secondly, about a year or so later, we had expanded into AD&D in a campaign at school, and ran through Irillian (White Dwarf). It was only really memorable 'cos it was a solid 20+ hours gameplay non-stop.

But for me, my local hobby shop ran an inhouse dungeon crawl for some six hears solid, with all sorts of parties running through it concurrently. I played in that dungeon for maybe three years, and on account of it being so bloody large, and finely detailied; us having some great DMs, and my character truely developing from a 1st level fighter through to a veteran of the megadungeon's deeper levels, it was truely a fantastic adventure. That said, I probably only ever got to see half of it. We could have stayed in there for many more years.

I've seen that guy somewhere before?

This week I've been mostly eating . . . The white ones with the little red flecks in them.
