Does this price make sense for a Gamma World Box Set?

Look-this is amazon (didn't see an ebay listing)

I'm really suprised. I didn't really think GW was valued much by collectors.

I know you guys are primarily collectors of D&D, but I'm new at going after this stuff online, and I thought I'd ask for some guidance. I'd really like to own a 2nd Ed GW set, but I didn't think it would run this much. Are these rare or something?

You can find it cheaper...just keep watching the ebay listings for awhile, one will turn up. For play, I'd go for the 4th version (book) or the 2nd version. If you are a completist, of course you'll have to eventually get all four versions, plus the Alternity version, plus Metamorphosis Alpha, but we'll wait on those....!

Sellers in a non-auction format will typically keep the price higher than what you'd have to dig for in the auction arena like eBay. It's only logical because a) the buyer is buying some convenience with a buy-it-now privilege and b) they are less needing to get rid of it.

With that said, you should probably be able to find a S/W copy of the 2nd Ed. set for about $30, out of shrink around $10-20 if it's complete. It really comes down to how long you want to wait, or how deep you want to dig, to get a good deal.

For example.

The 3rd Edition is slightly more valued (it's particuarly hard to get all the original dice). Here's a recent auction that got a little pricey, perhaps because it had all the dice:

GW shrink modules draw a fair amount of interest, in the range of $15-$25 a pop. Prices have come down some the last few years (at least for higher end GW modules like GW10). The screens and accessories slightly less, around $10 and up.

Out of shrink, the modules typically go for around $10 a piece if they are in nice condition. The only exceptions I can think of are GW1 and GW2.

The original boxset, complete and in good condition, usually goes for $20 or more, last I checked.

The pinnacle of GW collecting seems to be 1) the grenadier miniature sets which come out about once every 6 months (e.g. denizens, adventurers, etc). and 2) the 10th anniversary boxset, all of which tend to go for $50 and up.

It depends on which printing of this boxset you are talking about. If its a first print, you should probably expect to pay $50+

Mike's right however: it's not worth that much. The seller is Wayne's World of (Overpriced) Books -- who almost always jacks up the prices on his items well above what you'd normally find them for on eBay. :roll:

2d Edition is the best of the group and the scarcest. For me personally, $25 wouldn't be out of line. Oh, and if you're a completist, this is what you have to have:

Metamorphosis Alpha
Metamorphosis Alpha to Omega (Amazing Engine)
Metamorphosis Alpha (25th Anniversary Edition)
Metamorphosis Alpha (4th Edition)

Gamma World 1st - 4th editions (TSR)
Modules for Gamma World 1st - 4th Edition
Gamma Knights (Gamma World 4th Edition)

Alternity Gamma World
Omega World (Polyhedron Magazine)

Gamma World d20 doesn't qualify, though I personally do own a copy of it (freebie PDF).

This is in general a fact. However all major online stores [WWoB, DragonsTrove, NobleKnight, etc.] have bargain items too, you've just got to pore over the entire sites to find them.

I wonder if personal taste has something to do with it- maybe the overpriced items are the ones they consider to be the gems of their own collection, which they don't really even want to part with.

Having a few big money titles may also be a matter of prestige, intended to identify them as high rollers.

Don't forget the different printings. There are at least 3 printings of the 1st Edition and the Rules Supplement for second edition.

Traveller forgot to include Gammaraudars in the list, too. If you're going to get everything, you have to get everything, and that includes the funky game with the giant hamsters with lasers in the eyes that eat human for "popcorn."

The only similarities between Gammarauders and Gamma World are that they were both published by TSR and have cryptic alliances. Gammarauders is NOT a Gamma World game in any way, shape, or form.

Agent, d20 Gamma World is an absolute steaming pile of shit. Omega World does a far better job in it's 45 pages than d20 Gamma World did with it's approx. 300. I'd retrofit Omega World to work with Castles & Crusades, but would burn a d20 Gamma World book if I was given it.

By the way, did I say d20 Gamma World was bad?
