Do collectors really honestly do things like throw away Dragon #1 and Dungeon #1 because the staples are missing or the cover is slightly folded? Why can't you just sell them for slightly less?

Truthfully? No....

If you are bclarkie... I guess the answer is no

If you are me, then the answer is yes

I have a couple of lower Dragons that don't have the game insert in them, like Snit's Revenge etc... some times I toss those.. actually one in my store doesn't and in a couple of months, should it not sell... it's trash.. I have a nice copy in my collection and don't need it... I use to trash items before there was an eBay, so just because there is an eBay doesn't take away that option for me.

And just to expand on my 1st post, I don't throw away anything.  In my 8, almost 9 years now of collecting, aside from old random gaming papers(peoples old homebrew stuff and the sort, maps, old PC sheets, etc.) I have thrown a way a grand total of one thing. One.  The thing that I threw away wasn't even a full product, it was the map from a Gaz1 that was so mildewed and smelly that I had no choice but to.

I would just assume give something away to someone, then throw it in the trash can. Somebody, somewhere out there can find some use for pretty much anything whether the item is damaged, imcomplete, marked up or whatever. I don't throw anything away and I can almost garuantee 99.9% of the collectors out there are the same way. :)

Phew!  :D

So "toss" means "not sell"?

I throw away dragons all the time that have missing inserts.  There are so many around that have the inserts, it's foolish to even keep or sell them, because the typical dragon is not worth much anyway, damaged or with a missing insert, it's essentially worthless.
True story, I knew a guy who had hundreds of dragons he had gotten wholesale, and had made many attempts to sell them online but at most would only get $1 an issue or so (the issues were inthe 90s-190 or so).  He got so frustrated he ended up using them for packing material...he would rip the pages out and use them to stuff into boxes to pad them.  In his case he didn't have to buy packaging material anymore so I guess it was a good tradeoff for him.
I personally would never throw away something of historical significance like a Dragon 1 or such, simply because even in very bad condition someone somewhere might want it as a "placeholder" in their collection, or for research purposes.

Oh, yeh, also I typically toss anything with mildew or mold or water damaged...ANYTHING.  Letting something like that into your collection can be really bad news....

so why not just offer them to someone?

thats what i do. what i find is that the person is very grateful for it, they see you as a good person and more often than not, it will tempt them to come and buy from you anyway.

i dont do it for that purpose, it just turns out like that.

i just simply think its silly to just discard of things and trash them.

i gave away my 1st print Tegel at GenCon. it went to a good cause and i wouldnt have had it any other way. just because i had written in the booklet and the map was showing wear, i wouldnt have trashed it. its STILL extremely hard to get hold of, so i put it in a good home - not only that, its turned the guy now to looking at other prints of it and maybe turn him to collecting Judges Guild products.

i think thats a great thing. you want to attract folk to the hobby, not push them away.

but hey, to each their own, though i will never understand just throwing something away like that :)

I threw out my copies of Gary's original Castle Greyhawk notes just last night... and today, I wiped with a minty ST-1. Tomorrow, I think I'll sneeze and wipe with a Fazzlewood and a few hundred PoVQs.

Seriously, I highly doubt anyone sane destroys something they know they can sell. If it means taking a loss... they just keep it a while longer until the demand jumps back up.

Thanks for the info. It was this quote from ScketeWhisp that caused me to start this thread:

like the Dragon 1-6 I bought for over $500  several weeks back.. the seller was selling for a friend and they ended up with NO staples in them.. he wouldn't refund the money (though I only wanted partial refund) .. in any case, they should never have been sold at a price like that with no staples.. I tossed the mags.. heck I tossed a 2nd print Chainmail last summer, it was in pretty bad shape.. (and hey, it helps your items go up in value if there are less still out there)

I guess this was very much tongue in cheek then? Sorry if I missed that.

No tongue in cheek at all, he is actually claiming that he threw them out.

No Vosarnath... it was not tongue in cheek.. I threw them away.. gone...

That's the reason you are getting the smart remarks about wiping an ass with an ST-1... people here don't all think the same way... and I am somewhat considered way outside the box...

I was about to throw out a pretty bad OCE a couple months back, but my son asked if he could have it... I mean it was in poor condition... but I let him have it.

It's not that I won't sell something in poor shape .. I mean I sold about 15 old poor modules as a lot not long ago... though in reality they really belonged in the trash...

I have had garage sales where someone won't pay the price I have an item marked, return at the end of the day thinking he'll get some bargin if the item is left still, I still won't sell and I'll take it all to the dump the following day... just me I guess

Well, it was actually Dragon 1-6 and there were 2 copies of 6 and one had staples ... yeah !!!

So I kept the Dragon 6 since it cost me over $500.00 in essence ... one expensive #6 hanging out around here... but when I sell it, it'll be a rather large loss for sure :)

That is so totally ridiculous it makes me laugh!  Seriously, I could care less about your loss or the fact that you could have made at least some money off of selling the Dragons.   I also guess you're entitled to do what you want with your possessions.

I just find it funny that you think it appropriate to make a post like "I threw them away" when you know perfectly well that you could have given them away for FREE to just about anyone here or on Dragonsfoot and they would have gladly paid the shipping costs.

So, to make your post basically says:  "I'd rather throw these away, then give them to someone who might want them."

Nice guy there!  Glad to know ya'.

I could care less about my loss as well, so we both agree on something for sure.

But I see you are one of those types... like to twist others words to read how you want them to :)

Obviously you weren't here when it all transpired and the thought of giving them to anyone I know or didn't know wasn't even in my head. I make decisions on the fly, I don't ponder.

When the box arrived with the magazines described as being in "great shape", "wonderful shape", "well cared for" etc. I was hoping to find a nice set of mags. I opened the box and carefully and removed the contents. Each mag was wrapped in tissue paper, but none were boarded or bagged.. not exactly great packaging... I washed my hands, I put on cotton gloves, since I can tell what the magazines are through the tissue paper, I unwrap Dragon 1, I carefully hold it ever so lightly in my left hand while I turn my head to discard the tissue when WHOOSH !!! the entire contents of the magazine is all over the floor, down the steps into the living room etc.... I am now pissed.

I then open the rest and find they are all with no staples (except one of the #6). I was ready to toss them all at that point, but figured maybe I could get some type of refund on them and might need to send pictures back or something. I immediately contacted the seller to advise that these mags aren't worth 1/4 what they sold for and would he be willing to do a partial refund for any amount he chose. He advised he did not do partial refunds, but would refund the full amount if I returned the items in the same condition I had received them in the same packing.

That was it, in the trash they went.

First off, they couldn't be returned in the same condition, Dragon 1 was now all over the floor. Second I'd have never shipped them back in that lame packaging. Third, why would I return the items so the idiot could try and pawn them off on someone else.

Decision made, mags tossed, end of event, moved on with life.

But in any case, I still have the Dragon #6 that did have staples... should you so desire to have it Beyondthebreach, I will carefully remove the staples and ship it to you free of charge. Just drop me your address and it's yours without staples.

Actually I am a pretty swell guy . . . ask anyone.   :D

My point was you were being deliberately antagonistic.

Still, I"ll take that Dragon from you, since you offered.
