Gen Con book: any comments?

I'm anxiously waiting for the delivery of the Gen Con book my friend (Roberto Di Meglio, Heah Honcho of Nexus Edtrice - the Italian

company that designed War of the Ring, Marvel Heroes, Wings of War and currently busy at work with Age of Conan

) picked up for me at the convention (the thread about The Acaeum Dinner was a great reading but I fear Gen Con is too far and costly for me to attend :cry:

and I don't know if I can understand American English that well :wink:

). of course hidden in a delivery of goods for my store. I noticed the comment about the book's price being halved during the convention, so I wondered about the ideas of people having already read or at least perused it...

hey its as far for me to travel as it is for you - so thats no excuse

and all italians are rich anyway - everyone in europe knows that

i havent had the chance to read the book as yet, but i hope to this weekend if i find the time to do so - will yet you know as soon as i have.

I'm curious about the book too. Lots of good historical info? Photographs from early gencons?

As for understanding American English, BBC America sometimes runs subtitles for certain British shows.

Hmm, no, I don't have a gambling problem, I'm winning, and winning is not a problem. That's like saying Michael Jordan has a basketball problem, or Def Leppard has an awesomeness problem. So why don't y'all pour some sugar on that?

The book is very good for historical buffs like us here at the Acaeum. Plenty of quotes and stories from the beginning of the game to present. No opinions really. Great read although a little expensive ($35.00 US)

I would recommend it to anyone interested in the history of the game.

Games can get you through times of no money but money can not get you through times of no games!!

Well, I'm not the only one. I remember doing business with a Briton living in the Hawaii and receiving his congratulations because I used good English while all around him Americans used unintelligible garbage

wel they like to call it that i guess.......not that you can understand half of what some say - i remember asking folk many times to repeat things because i couldnt undestand them.

the acaeum guys were ok though

Well, I wondered about going to the US for Gen Con various times but besides the money it seems that every year entering in the Land of the Free gets harder. Now I'm told you must have a special passport issued AND ask for a visa something like three months in advance. I can understand when I'm not welcome, thanks - I'll stick with the European Union and Shengen Area

. For some bizarre reasons, France and UK are keen to attract Italian tourists and not the other way around

This said, the book arrived at last yesterday afternoon along the big shipment (that, of course, was a little flawed

). When I saw the book my first reaction was "That's all???" - I anticipated a big coffee table book and I was, uhm, a little unimpressed by its little size. Then I checked the page count and I noticed 168 pages, so I relaxed

. At home I started reading... and reading... and reading... until I fell asleep on the couch around 11 PM. Albeit I consider the text formed by various quotations somewhat dispersive

, it was a great reading (especially the anecdotes - I remember clearly John Tynes "Gen Con on a budget" one...). I'm halfway and I plan to finish it in a couple of evenings. It's a great book and I really suggest it to everybody. Photos were interesting too. Now if anybody cared to write an history of TSR and Gary Gygax produced his autobiography...

No, we speak American. It is a melange of Spanish, English, French, Yiddish, Italian and anything else we feel like stealing. So many nuances, so many confusing spellings and pronunciations--we love it.

I've read up through about GenCon 1980 or so, and it's been very very good. I wish I'd thought to submit some stories, since I have some additional info about some of the different events they discuss, and could have offered up my first meeting of EGG at the age of 10 or so (in the Origins section, though

).

In any event, the book's quite good so far, and well-worth picking up!

Finished reading it and highly recommend it. Really glad that this book was made. There are numerous typos, but that's not a big deal, and I wish there were more photographs from the first 15 years, but that's just because I'm greedy. It does have a lot of good photos.
