This is worth de-cloaking for:

http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/welcome

Note the "4" in the stylized word "Adventure."

Note the countdown clock.

Note that tomorrow (Friday) is traditionally the day for big GenCon announcements.

Now, add it all together ... and probably throw in GleeMax, too. :pukel:

Any guesses?

+++++

Edit: whoops, tomorrow is actually Thursday ... but I still think we can all see what is coming, regardless of the day of the week.

From the bits I've picked up places, it's sounding more like an evolutionary revision than a "throwing everything out and starting all over again" one.  It also sounds like they may have finally listened to players, and are simplifying the preparation needed to run a game using it.

I'll probably take a look when it comes out, but since I haven't had the urge to do any high-fantasy gaming in a long time, I can't say if I'd actually buy it.

I don't care what they do, they can't take my 1st Edition away from me!

FWIW, my money's on DDM and D&D moving closer together.

Perhaps they are "four-feiting" the copyrights to D&D and allowing it to cede to a company that will produce quality products of all editions? Begin holding breath now...

Hmm, no, I don't have a gambling problem, I'm winning, and winning is not a problem. That's like saying Michael Jordan has a basketball problem, or Def Leppard has an awesomeness problem. So why don't y'all pour some sugar on that?

Some additional analysis/details @ www.enworld.org

I'll be curious about how this impacts folks at the show....

About time, damnit. I've only been saying all year that 4th edition would be released at GenCon this year, only to be told "no, you idiot, they wouldn't do that." Well, I hope I am stupid, just to be proved right.

The buildup to 3.0 had its denial phase as well. Various publishing events which were once hotly dismissed as unfounded rumor:

TSR would be bought by WotC.
Dragon magazine archives would be released on CD-rom.
D&D would be revised.
WotC would be bought by Hasbro.

Early appearances of the 3.0 artwork were said to be ripped from Warhammer by crafty rumor-mongers.

On the other hand, a healthy debate over what is or isn't plausible is a good way to get more information.

I know this is sadistic, but I am actually quite giddy about the 4E announcement.    All the crap that the 3E people heaped on all the OOP fans over the last 7 years or so, its going to be fun watching them have to now put up with it themselves as they are all now going to be OOP fans.   :P   Fun, fun, fun....   :D
