I thought I remember our group discussing it around 1985, but now I'm wondering if it was later? I don't have mine with me. Does anyone know?

AFAIK, the 2nd edition PHB came out in 1989.

it also says 1989. noticed david "zeb" cooks foreword is jan 1989 too.
