Player's Handbook v3.5 "Special Edition"?

A bit outside usual scope but I was going through some of my v3.5 stuff and noticed that I have copies of the regular Player's Handbook v3.5 that are the following printings:
* First printing July 2003
* First printing: July 2003, Special Edition October 2004

The are both the regular print version (not the black leather-like books), anyone know what makes it a "Special Edition"?  Page counts seem the same to me.

IIRC it's the first edition with errata incorporated into it.

A second print run then... wyy on earth in rpg we have this effect of "special", "collectors" and so forth instead of ordinary descriptions like in any other book?

The first printing which said "Special Edition" was the black leather-like book in October 2004, and as grodog noted, it has the errata (up to that point at least) applied. After that, whenever they reprinted the ordinary (not leather) hardcovers, they used the same source files, with the same printing history.

I think all of the 3.5 Player's Handbooks printed from October 2004 onwards say "First printing: July 2003, Special Edition October 2004", with the exception of the softcover Player's Kit version ("Original Hardcover Edition First Printing: July 2003, First Paperback Printing: June 2006") and the recent premium reprint ("First Printing: July 2003, This Printing August 2012").

And don't forget the GENCON 2003 Special Edition PHB....
