Well its early this year July 30  - Aug 2.  I have already reserved rooms and such.

Who else from the Acaeum are planning on attending? :)

I didn't know about the date change, I can't go :(

Why would they move the dates for such a big event?

I draw the line at collecting... D&D beach towels.

Shoulda been: ".. from Pangreenia to Floratopolis, from mystical Treeonia of spectral Forests to Schruborial dimensions." - The Forests of Leng

I don't know why it was moved so early, but I think it's been set that way for a while.  They book these pretty far in advance.  According to the Gen Con website:

Future Show Dates

Gen Con has been in Indianapolis since 2003 and has signed an extension with Visit Indy through 2020. Below are the upcoming show dates.

   July 30 -- August 2, 2015
   August 4-7, 2016
   August 17-20, 2017
   August 2-5, 2018
   August 1-4, 2019
   July 30 -- August 2, 2020

These shows will all be held at the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis, Indiana.

So except for 2017, for the next six years, it's the first week of August.

BTW, only VIGs can register for badges and housing so far.  General preregistration starts next Friday, January 23, and housing registration on Sunday, January 25 at noon ET.

And yes . . . I have my VIG badge, and my room at the Marriott.   :D

The change will probably work out better for me, and probably a few others who have kids in college, since mid to late August conflicts with college move-in dates.

Yep.  Early August is really a much better time, overall.

I've been to 20+ in a row, but I may end up having to skip this one (not because of the dates) and break the streak.

Same here. My participation depends on housing and so far the number of people wanting to get into Gencon is still exceeding the number of people it drives away.

My wife and I actually had a long discussion about this last night as we read through the hundreds of posts on the housing glitch and costs.  While we love downtown Indy we basically decided we were very lucky to attend in 2007 and 2008 before it exploded and won't be planning to attend anymore Gencons.  At this point we (and mostly myself) are going to concentrate on regional, smaller cons where the giant crowds aren't as intimidating.....NTRPG Con (obviously), Garycon, Gamehole Con, etc.  We would love to go back but frankly we can have 3-4 "vacations" a year for what we would spend on one week in Indy!  For the last decade we've been going back and forth every year on going to Gencon again, we just decided to forever drop the idea and concentrate on attending smaller (and cheaper) cons instead, and it's been pretty liberating.  We already have some great plans for this year.

I went last year (first time since the early 1990s) and would have loved to have stayed downtown. Ended up out by the airport and rode the shuttle in each day. Was A LOT cheaper even including the shuttle ticket, but clearly not as convenient and not the right choice for everyone. I though it work OK for me though.

For me I think Gencon is an every 3-4 years trip, not every year. This year I'm going to Garycon and NTRPG, with maybe Gamehole again if I can swing it.

I will be there as usual.

BTW...  They moved the date due to a conflict with this event:

Some of you may remember the same event happened on Gen Con weekend in 2013.

I'll be there.  Didn't get a downtown room, but to be honest, with the way prices have exploded, we weren't sure we could justify the extra expense.  I can stay at the airport, take cabs every day, and STILL have more money in my pocket for the auction.
