Hey all-

I have a copy of the Greyhawk folio version without maps.  I recently saw an online auction for the folio version and noticed that the maps are similar in look to the boxed set maps.  Can anyone definitively tell me if the art changed between the two versions?  How about paper feel, look?

I may go on an ebay hunt to find the maps, as they seem to pop up from time to time.   Is there a way to tell the difference between folio edition and boxed edition, is really what I am after.

Thanks
Tim

I believe the maps in the different GH editions are folded differently, but with no other differences.

Might be wrong on that last phrase tho.

That is a tough question.  There are different textures of the greyhawk maps - some on glossy paper and others on thicker paper but I believe I have had versions of the folio and boxed sets that had both these types.  I'm not sure I have ever noticed a difference on how they were folded but now I feel an obligation to go check.

Aside from the type of paper, the maps from the boxed set are slightly smaller, reduced in size to fit the box. I no longer have the box set, but I recall it being somewhere around a 2% reduction.

The reduction may have been something done later as well - I have a couple sets where the maps fit very poorly in the box.

Paul Stormberg has a good post over on CD speaking to the size and paper differences. Worth googling!

Definitely a size difference between folio and box. I have a box set with missing maps and a folio with maps. The folio's maps won't fit in the box. I'd love to get a set of maps for the box set, but the sole reason I got the folio was for the maps.

Let me clarify.  There are definitely 2 sizes of maps but I don't think they are exclusive to only the folios and boxes.  I have a few copies of a 1st print box where the maps don't fit well - they curl up inside the box but for later prints they were adjusted.

Reading Stormberg's post, it doesn't mention different printings of the folio or the box and seems to make hasty generalizations that all prints are the same which is very much not the case.

Okay, looking at some of the folios and boxes that I have, there seems to be at least 4 different types of paper used:

1) Thick glossy - "1980, TSR Hobbies, Inc.  All rights reserved" and has product code in bottom right, a bit smaller than 3)
2) Medium glossy - states only "1980, TSR Games" in bottom right corner
3) Thin glossy - states "1980, TSR Hobbies, Inc.  All rights reserved" and has product code in bottom right
4) Papery not-so-glossy - state product code for 1015, much smaller map

Early folios and early boxed sets had 2) medium glossy.
Later folios and early boxes seem to have 1) Thick glossy and 3) Thin glossy
Later boxed sets have 4) papery not-so-glossy

The maps in the folio are slightly bigger than the boxed sets but the boxed sets also have at least 2 or 3 different sized maps too.  Most of the maps seem to be folded into 8 but I do have one that is folded into 12 squares (and does not show any signs it was ever folded differently).

Probably also worth mentioning that the map folding in the folios are not very consistent - usually the maps are different heights - one seems to be generally about at least 1/4 inch taller than the other.

Also to answer the question that doesn't seem to be answered on Dragonsfoot - are the maps actually bigger or is it just the border?  The border is definitely bigger but so are the hexes - if you match up a single hex it is difficult to tell (they are close) but over the course of the whole map, yes there is definitely a difference (almost 1 full hex).

EDIT: I'm going to have to organize this post a bit better!

TSR Boxed Sets (4 different prints so far)

1) Box top: no "by Gary Gygax" under "Fantasy Game Setting", "Products Of Your Imagination" (with quotes) under TSR logo
Box bottom: bottom right has code "1015" stacked above "394-53168-XTSR1200"
Books: do not state "written by Gary Gygax" on first interior (white) page
Catalog: does not list "David Axler" on credits page
Glossography: page 48 does not have "1015XXX1923" under the Proof of Purchase and same page does not have demi-god note under Zagyg description
Maps: Thick glossy paper - textured like feel, each map is 34.25 X 22.25 inches folded into 8 with back white outside, a bit too big for the box so curls at end, hexes are slightly smaller than folio maps
Left Map: states "1980 TSR Hobbies, Inc.\n  All Rights Reserved.", no border on interior edge
Right Map: states "1980 TSR Hobbies, Inc.\n  All Rights Reserved." and has "115-M-9025" in bottom right, no border on interior edge

2) Box top: no "by Gary Gygax" under "Fantasy Game Setting", "Products Of Your Imagination" (with quotes) under TSR logo, colouring and wording in bubbles seems darker than 1)
Box bottom: bottom right has code "1015" stacked above "394-53168-XTSR1200"
Books: state "written by Gary Gygax" on first interior (white) page
Catalog: does not list "David Axler" on credits page
Glossography: page 48 does not have "1015XXX1923" under the Proof of Purchase and same page does not have demi-god note under Zagyg description
Maps: Thick glossy paper - textured like feel, each map is approx 34.25 X 22.25 inches (out by about 1/16, maybe trimming variation?) folded into 12 colour map on outside, small so it fits easily in box, hexes are slightly smaller than folio maps
EDIT: comes with a red 1 page Dragon Magazine Subscription form.

3) Box top: has "by Gary Gygax" under "Fantasy Game Setting", "PRODUCTS OF YOUR IMAGINATION" (without quotes) under TSR logo, TSR logo mentioned in trademarks statement
Box bottom: bottom right has code "1015" stacked above "394-53168-XTSR1200" and "1015XXX9401" under barcode on bottom left
Books: state "written by Gary Gygax" on first interior (white) page
Catalog: lists "David Axler" on credits page
Glossography: page 48 has "1015XXX1923" under the Proof of Purchase and same page has demi-god note under Zagyg description
Maps: waxy papery feel- duller colouring, each map is 31.25 X 21.5 folded into 8, fits easily in box, hexes are smaller than prints above
Left Map: states "1015XXX0702" and has a white numbered border on right edge (where it joins right map)
Right Map: states "1015XXX0703" and has a white unnumbered border on left edge (where it joins left map)
* maps in previous prints do not have a white border along interior edge
EDIT: comes with Role Playing Game Association form

4) Box top: has "by Gary Gygax" under "Fantasy Game Setting" "PRODUCTS OF YOUR IMAGINATION" (without quotes) under TSR logo, TSR logo mentioned in trademarks statement
Box bottom: bottom right has code "1015" on "ISBN 0-88038-344-5" on "$15.00" and "1015XXX9401" under barcode on bottom left
Books: state "written by Gary Gygax" on first interior (white) page
Catalog: lists "David Axler" on credits page
Glossography: page 48 has "1015XXX1923" under the Proof of Purchase and same page has demi-god note under Zagyg description
Maps: Similar to 3)

Wizard Logo Folio Maps - bottom flap:
* glossy smooth paper, back is similar to a wax paper type feel - thick thickness (not a textured feel like boxed set 1) and 2))
* colour is darker and rich
* thick border on top and bottom edges
* Left Map: has a thick white numbered border on right edge
* Right Map: no white left border (this makes the 2 maps different sizes)
* Both maps state "1980 TSR Games"
* Size: Left is 35 X 23 inches, Right is 35 X 22 3/4 inches

Wizard Logo Folio Maps - side flap:
* glossy smooth paper - medium thickness (but thinner than prints 1) and 2) of the boxed set)
* thick border on top and bottom edges
* Left Map: has a thick white numbered border on right edge
* Right Map: no white left border (this makes the 2 maps different sizes)
* Both maps state "1980 TSR Games"
* Size: Left is 35 X 23 inches, Right is 35 X 22 9/16 inches

TSR Face Logo Folio
* glossy smooth paper - thin thickness
* thick border on top and bottom edges
* Left Map: has a thin white numbered border on right edge
* Right Map: no white left border (this makes the 2 maps different sizes)
* Both maps state "1980 TSR Hobbies, Inc.\n  All Rights Reserved." and has "115-M-9025" in bottom right
* Size: Left is 35 X 23 inches, Right is 35 X 22 15/32 inches

Notes on Folio vs Boxed set maps:
Folio has a white numbered border on right edge of left map and no white left border on right map (making left and right maps different sizes) - box set maps are same size and either both maps have white border on interior edge or neither do
Folio maps have a thick border on both top and bottom edge - boxed set only on bottom edge
Both left and right folio maps may state "115-M-9025" in bottom right compared with only right map in boxed sets
Folio maps are taller - 35 inches compared with 34.25 and smaller in the boxed sets

Conclusion: earlier Folio maps are very nice but early boxed set maps are good too (but Folio ones are slightly bigger)
* As with most TSR products later reprints were done with cost saving methods

I don't have a good sampling of the very earliest Folio prints so if someone wants to add information about those that would be great!

And a brief trivia note...
That's Dr. Dave Axler (U.PA., Folklore/Oral Histories), a player in my Philadelphia campaign incarnation,
the guy who talked me into applying for a job at TSR.
Wrote the Weather of Greyhawk system (Dragon mag & then incorporated into the boxed set).
He's still in west Philly, still plays occasionally.

Thank you for sharing this information. This is definitely very interesting.
I was only aware of the two versions mentioned on the Miscellaneous section.
I will surely check the two versions I have. In any case, this information will make me want to get the other two.
However, apart from the EGG name on the box lid, it may be difficult to identify the prints at first glance on Ebay listings, it will surely need questions to sellers. Not to mention the possible mixture of elements between versions.

Yes.  The box lid only lets you distinguish between 1/2 and 3/4 prints.
The back of the box will let you distinguish between 1/2 and 3 and 4 prints but probably need a contents check for 1 and 2.  Mine have a difference in colour on the boxes but its tough to say if that is consistent for the print run or only for my copies.

The ones with "Gary Gygax" mentioned on the box cover do seem rarer - later print runs are probably smaller.  I should probably find a 4th print too :)

Looking on Ebay, I see there is a completed auction for 2 - you can see the maps are much smaller than the book (so folded in 12 instead of 8).  It also has the red Dragon Magazine subscription sheet (mine does too) so I have added that to the description as well.

** expired/removed eBay auction **

Here's a 3rd, with the RPGA form (also matching my copy):

** expired/removed eBay auction **

Here is a 4th:

** expired/removed eBay auction **

So it seems like all of the prints should be fairly easy to find but ones in excellent shape might take some patience.
