Either my Search-fu is weak, or it hasn't been discussed. Has anyone shown photos of the dice typically included with each the box sets (Holmes, B/X, BECMI, or other as appropriate)?

I've been doing a lot of research about the correct dice for non-TSR items (Chaosium, FGU, etc.) over the last few months.  I'm getting close to having it pretty well figured out, but it's not quite ready for posting yet.

Curiously, I don't have an TSR box sets with dice.  They just don't quite fit within the lines of what I collect.  Odd.

The Holmes set included those old familiar 70's dice.
B and X sets had the same dice as were sold in the "Dragon Dice" packs of the early 80's ( http://www.acaeum.com/ddindexes/miscpages/odd.html )
BECMI did not come with dice (if I recall correctly ... It has been some years ...)

Remember that later sets of the Holmes Basic set did not include dice.  They included chits because the dice had run out.

Oh, I'm familiar with Holmes sets. It's about the only thing in the Basic line with which I have a clue (my first set of dice :D ). I've seen sets of 5 light blue or tan dice (not inked - like the one in the pic for Dragon Dice), which I think are with the Moldvay or Mentzer basic set. I have a bagged set of multi-colored dice (Gamescience) which are from that era, but I don't know which set with which they were sold, unless they were only sold separately in mixed colors.

Some later iterations of the Holmes Basic came with the dice you describe.
