There were some old & forgotten threads about it but I prefer open another one. Lokiwookie and I are almost certain that there are 6 different prints of the Basic set in french.

Here are some pictures, and some explanations. One of them (the third) is very strange because there are some (great) spelling mistakes...

Here we go.

First Print (I'll spare you some details):
- orange box
- top banner ''Règles de base et module d'introduction y compris'
- Face Logo
- Contains the rulebook, the module B2, dice and a pen.

Second Print:
- red box
- top banner 'Règles de base, module d'introduction, un jeu de six dés, plus un crayon ci-inclus'.
- Angled Logo
- Contains the rulebook, the B2 module, dice and a pen.

Third Print:
- box slightly reddish purple
- Contains 2 booklets and dice.

This version is strange because it is heavily bugged.

Herewith a few examples really surprising (but there are others in the booklets).

I.e.
Livret de règles du maitre du donjons => du donjon -singular-
Corregè instead of corrigé (funny, corrigé = corrected)
Touts droits réservés => Tous droits réservés

Fourth Print:
- red box
- Contains 2 booklets and dice.

This version is now 'corrigée' (rather than 'corregè').

Fifth print:
- red box
- Contains 2 booklets and dice.

This version differs from the previous one:
- on the back of the box can read an informative message on the product's compliance (bottom left) ON A STICKER. The sticker is easily removable.
- You can find '4 th Edition ' written in the first booklet
- You can find advertisements for SOLAR products.

Sixth print:
- red box
- Contains 2 booklets and dice.

This version differs from the previous one:
- on the back of the box can read an informative message on the product's compliance (bottom right) -no sticker-.
- You can find '4 th Edition ' written in the first booklet (as the 5th) BUT NOV 87 also (near TSR).

(You can find advertisements for SOLAR products, as the 5th print).

Seventh Print:
- more rigid box red and shiny
- Contains 2 booklets & dice

The booklets are identical to those of the previous prints. (There is therefore the material of the box which differ).

Great work! It's nice to see the entirety of each set, and everything at once. Could you add an approximate year of publication for each set?

I assume the B2 is a translation of the revised version (for Moldvay) and not the original (for Holmes)? (Wouldn't make sense to be the original, but sometimes mistakes are made...)

Actually, we don't know exactly. It could be:
- 1st print is november 1982
- 2nd print is 1983 (no more details)
- 3rd print is 1985 (no more details)
- 4th print: certainly 1985 or 1986, close after the 3rd but we have no clue
- 5th print should be november 1987
- 6th print: don't know, around 1988

To show some differences in color (in addition to those existing between the first two versions ...)

This is a fourth (left) and a third print :

Here are the 6th and the 7th. The box is brilliant, shiny.

If anybody has got some informations about these, don't hesitate.

(Update)

Now 7 different versions.
Thanks to Dwarf & Antoine for the new one (the '5th' in fact, with the sticker).
And thanks to Loki.

7 is enough !

It is not :)  the 1st print book only is the same as the 1st print book in the box.
Some said that the book was sold separetely as well because of problem to make the box, but no clue about this and all the 1st ad about French D&D include the box. It is only an urban legend :)
A way for some sellers to sell an incomplete boxed set...

Axel, I really have problem with this story. We haven't found any confirmation here in France.
- the books were printed in the US, dices were produced in the US too, so the boxes -probably-... so what would be the supply problem ?
- french VAT is different if you sell books (without a box) or books in a box...

I highly doubt that there are two different 'first print'. Maybe some boxes were crushed during the shipping and some books were sold without, but I don't believe in a 'true first print'.
We are still investigating... :)

If you have some time to make a scan or take a picture, maybe we can compare our 'first'.

my apologies if i dont recall where i found this info... anyway, let me explain better my point: i dont want to say that there is a "true" 1st print which is different from the "ordinary" 1st print...

the info i have is that a 1st print run has been done for books only... then (i assume) with no changes at all in contents or layout, the same book has been printed in a second round to be sold in boxed sets... hence 2 different print runs, no difference between the books.

let me try to retrieve the info again and i will post it back.

ciaooo, axel

It is written here, at the foreign section, but we didn't found any mention of that in the old french magazines.
I will look at them again...

I would be interested to find any information (real information) about this as well. If you have a reliable source, I am very interested.
As Le Rahib, I am pretty sure that there was never any 1st batch of rulebooks that were sold out of boxes. The first D&D I have seen was in box, and all my friends too. But, who knows...

I wrote a blog post about the French translation of Holmes, which according to one report was included English-language Holmes sets sold in France:
