My job is sending me to Orange County for two weeks starting on the 26th, and I may have some free time Labor Day weekend. I'm looking at website for Strategicon, and seeing intriguing words like "flea market" and "auction" in their description of the Gateway 2010 convention.

Any SoCal Acaeumites have an opinion about the Strategicon flea market and auction? Worth the stop for an old-schooler or not?

We had good Cons in the 80's 8)

I tried this one a few years back and it wasn't too good. If you're looking to play games it's a fine Con still.

Ask me about my new M16!

While I might be a bit biased (being involved with the running of the cons -- and specifically I work the flea markets and auction), I'd say it's improved dramatically since the new ownership took over 3 years ago (for 2007) as far as games available and other rpg events.

As far as the flea market and auction, you never know what you'll see. While certainly nothing startling, we've had a white box D&D set show up in both the flea market and dealer room in the last couple years as well as some small press oddities like Tradervale and a 1st edition revised Authentic Thaumaturgy. It's not GenCon, but it can be surprisingly good for both RPGs and board games (last show a 1st ed Streets of Stalingrad showed up). You just have to keep your eyes open in the flea market.

I was trying to get out to the Orc Con version of the three cons last Feb to specifically check out the "flea market", but at the last minute my schedule didn't permit. I'd like to see if I can get there for this one coming up. I had heard from one of the dealers (Last Grenadier, which is in Burbank) that some of the flea market sellers have older (ie 1e stuff) there, since I was specifically looking for a bunch of Dragon magazines.

I wonder if there was an auction list from the last couple of cons?

Are you're looking for other stores possibly to hit in the southern california area while you're out here?
