I'll be in Gulf Shores, Ala., for a week and was wondering
if there are any brick & mortar shops that sell RPGs
and/or used books in the area.

I can reasonably drive as far east as Destin, Fla.,
or as far north as Mobile.

And also, are there any good indie bookshops in the region?

Very narrow geography, I realize, but it's an area that's
popular enough down here that maybe one of you
knows of a place(s).

There is a used bookshop in downtown Mobile, but I think it is hopeless for rpg. :twisted:

There is also one in Pensacola that might be a possibility. I have only gone twice but bought something each time. Can probably find them in the phone book or online. No idea the name of the place.

There is a also new stock game store that stocks d&d in Pensacola. I have never gone but they participate in free rpg day, etc. so you can get in touch with them that way.

Other than that I think it's hopeless down here except the internet!

Gainsville would be a good bet, but that's a serious drive to shop.

Best bet is the Pensacola flea market. It's not a bad one, actually if you can manage to navigate through all the cheap import stuff.

Pensacola is a possibility. Not too far.
And gets me away from the in-laws :-)

Gainesville is much too far.

But do you mean a real flea market?
Like outside, in a huge parking lot or something?

Yes, a real large outdoor one with corrugated galvanized metal awnings over the booths and aisles that are open on both sides. There is one in Mobile, also, but the one in Pen is a better possibility because of the naval air base over there. It's fairly huge and not as overrun with Spanish language pirated movies and total junk like many flea markets. We always find some fun things but it's a long drive.

There is restaurant right in the smack middle that is sometimes rated Pensacola's best breakfast, too.

We have been happy enough with things we bought (other than rpg) to consider getting a hotel on Friday sometimes just to get up and go to the flea, lol. And, of course then go to beach, lunch, zoo's etc. It's a retirement community and military community rolled up in one so just about anything could turn up.

Bobe's Hobby shop in Pensacola took part in free rpg day, so they might be worth a look

I have family in the area but I neglected to browbeat them into trying to score a freebie for me.

I have bought things on ebay from jamast. In RL they are:

Book and Game Emporium
311 Racetrack Rd NW
Fort Walton Beach
Florida 32547

and might be worth a look.

Let me know if you make it to either one - I go up there frequently and would be interested to know if they are worth a visit.

I would love a report on Bobe's too. That is the place I was thinking about. After contemplating going for events, i had to face the reality that I save three hours and a ton of gas just buying stuff online instead of going that far!

This would be worth a trip just for the cultural experience alone.
Thanks! I may just head over there. I used to road trip to Pensacola way back in college, so it'd be good for nostalgia-sake as well.

That's a damn rare thing these days.

I'll try to check out Book and Game Emporium, too.

I'd rather head eastward anyway.
It's more scenic and less congested than Mobile.

I didn't make it to the hobby shop.

Had to drop off my brother-in-law at Pensacola airport very early,
and they weren't open ... the hobby shop, that is.
The airport was open.
And weird.
The map takes you to the backroad leading to the control tower.
Surprised we didn't get arrested.

Anyway ....
The flea market was cool!
Saw a great collection of pulp fiction but no RPG stuff.
