I know it's not TSR or even D&D exactly, but sorta claims to be.

** expired/removed eBay auction **

What is this exactly?  Sorry if this should be in the non-TSR forum.  I wasn't really sure where to post it.

Edit:  Errr...Ummm... I didn't look at who the seller was before posting.  I have a feeling someone on this site knows what it is.  Please stop laughing at me.

I can't seem to delete my post.  So, when ya'll have had a well deserved guffaw at my expense please delete it.  Or not.  I should get cookie for something so funny.

Not TSR and not D&D but a free download for the core rules (a cool printed/box set version is for sale - a very limited production run as well as a softcover and hardcover) and a pretty neat product overall:

http://rpg.geekdo.com/rpgitem/47724/swo ... y-whitebox

about halfway down you'll see links - one to an English review and the other to the official website.

Okay, now I get it.  Thanks.  That's what i get for posting while bored and over-tired.

I almost added to my OP that I came here instead of asking the seller because I'm likely to get better answers here.  That would have been even more embarrasing.  Oh, wait...

Joking aside, that is the Badmike from this sight, correct?

I think so... and if so, he's a very reputable seller. I've actually bought from him before he knew me - might not have sold me anything if he did ;)

The rumor is they didn't make many actual box sets so it's a worthwhile pickup, IMO.

One of the booklets (obviously available free in PDF form) is Matt Finch's A Primer for Old School Gaming which I consider mandatory reading for anyone interested in a good treaty of the core differences in RPGs then and now (though with the rebirth of the retro-clones and simulacrums that line gets blurred again).

Still going cheap at Troll & Toad, fwiw; http://www.trollandtoad.com/p294364.html (sorry, Mike!)

*nods* Good reading/food for thought, agreed. :)

I seem to be finding quite a few of these old school D&D clones out there:
Labyrinth Lord, BFRPG, S&W, just to name a few.

Is this a new trend, or has it been going on for a few years?

Also found one site that had combined the white box rules with Greyhawk to make a pre-BM/EW/GDGH ruleset.

I had no no idea they existed either, while I'm not a prolific collector like yourself, I'm also not new.

Echoing off the top of my empty head . . .

Retro-clones have been going on for a few years but not much more than that.  For example, I have a hardback of a retro-clone called Spellcraft & Swordplay that is dated 2008.  The acknowledgements include a line that reads

Matthew Finch and Stuart Marshall, for getting the whole "retro-gaming" phenomenon up and running in a big way

According to Wikipedia ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OSRIC ), the first version of Old School Reference and Index Compilation was released in 2006.

"Prolific collector" is The Acaeum's term for status based on # posts.
It's probably an homage to XP levels. You'll notice some are Sage Collectors, Grandstanding Collectors, etc.

If I were to describe my collecting, it'd be more like "Clueless Collector".

Case in point of my cluelessnessisity, I hadn't heard the term OSRIC until now.
Thanks for the info!

OSRIC Thread --

An older thread on this topic faded out back in 2007 ...

http://www.acaeum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4210&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=osric&start=60

What other OSRIC products are out there?
Dozens or hundreds probably.

I bought StoneHell mega-dungeon yesterday, and just downloaded some free old school material from RPGNow.

I may have found a new collecting goal: new old rules.

I do actually realize the titles are tied to post counts.  I was in weird mood yesterday. :D

We currently list about 60 specifically designed for OSRIC

http://rpg.geekdo.com/rpg/1297/old-scho ... tion-osric

which is not exhaustive I'm sure.

Oh ... heheheh ... trust me, I for example am utterly clueless. I visit the Acaeum for the secondhand price guides, and I visit the forums for the non-collecting discussions, which are numerous.

If that copy of Spellcraft & Swordplay is by Jason Vey, it is probably collectible - he didn't make very many of those (fewer than 100, IIRC). The other "retro-clone" material is generally not released in print runs, so there's not a cutoff to limit numbers or identifiable print runs. There are a few revisions to the Swords & Wizardry rules and the Labyrinth Lord rules that could possibly be collectible, I suppose, if retro-clones were the specific theme of a collection.

I'm not sure if Brave Halfling is going to have any distinguishing marks on the later releases of the WhiteBox. If so, then the first print runs would have an identifiable "total number printed."

Hope that helps. If any of the retro-clones rises into the mainstream market, the interesting thing is that there are generally very, very few copies of the earlier printings since it's such a niche market. We'll see.
