Looks like a spot needs to be squeezed in between the first and second printings, maybe.

Nice catch. I will have to check and see if any of mine match that "transition" copy.

I was just flipping through a couple I have.

The one without the white circled 2 on the front cover has:

no page number for X1
"Edited by David Cook with Steve Marsh"
(c) 1974, 1977, 1978, 1981
no mention above that in bold "By Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson" (my white circled copy has this)

back side of the front cover (all black ink):
"EDITOR: Dave Cook with Steve Marsh"

back cover:
(c) 1974, 1977, 1978, 1980

The "white circled 2 front cover" table of contents has "EDITOR: David Cook with Steve Marsh"

I have another "white circled 2 front cover" version that does not mention "By Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson" on the page X1, and there is no page number for X1, but "David Cook" is mentioned on both areas

So maybe there's two additional printings in addition to what's already been found?

Here are the 4 different printings that I have:

3rd print:

4th print:

I think all the ones mentioned above are in there. Double check to make sure.
Are there any others out there?

Mine match your 2nd, 3rd and 4th. I didn't do a search to see whether this topic had been gone through before, but I see that there's only three prints listed in the expert set section currently.

Something for us to put forth to Scott's attention for a site update in the future...maybe with all those PHB updates  :)

I picked up an actual 1st print of this (matches chromaticknight's top photos) except that it's 5-hole punched. It may be that whoever bought it stuck it in their five-hole puncher, but I was curious if anyone else has a five-hole punched Expert of Basic, for that matter, booklet that was purchased that way.

I think 5-hole punch is a British standard.  Can anyone confirm that?  Might provide a clue.

EDIT: by the way, I did buy it from the UK, so that may be a good point!
