I am looking for specific information on how to determine the difference between a 1st and 2nd print woodgrain boxed set. As far as I can tell, the only way to tell is by the books themselves- which would have the notation "Second Printing -- January 1975" or not.

Yep.
As far as I know that is it.

Boxes are no different.

Time for yet another of my ongoing appeals for the Mystery First Print.

Gary was utterly certain that the 1st print did not mention "D&D Art Prints". However, this has not been verified in 20 years of searching.

So if anyone can turn up a brown with early catalog (last page of Book 1; large print, short) that doesn't mention the Art Prints... that would finally lay this issue to rest, and become the True First for OD&D.

If you insist. :)

IIRC Gary was also at one point certain that there were only two woodgrain printings before the white box.
I know it's still on the "check list", Frank, and thanks for that; but given that the 1st prints sent over to Dave Arneson's group early on don't have such a mention...
Now, if only we could find who "acquired" Greg Stafford's copy - even if that wasn't the first sold (as claimed), it should be pretty early given the month he stated.

Other than the obvious stickerless Pre-Publication Boxes.

Faro: If you know otherwise please inform the membership.

How many times? :)

> As far as I know boxes are no different.

Any other than small label, horizontal grain for an early 1st print requires explanation. Intermediate hybrid 1st/2nds and (possibly/probably) some of the late variant 1sts go with small label, vertical grain as do the 2nds. "Mix and match" may exist to a degree but from (several dozen) observed original-state sets is apparently not quite as prevalent as had been believed by one ex-staffer.

Not pre-publication. False lead, does not exist as such, as confirmed from multiple angles of research a couple of years ago.

So you are saying there is a difference in the boxes?

Box production does not match book production perfectly (and likewise for 4ths/5ths), but the general trends are there.

Keep an eye out for those woodgrain Tractics sets, too.

Please keep in mind I was not visiting here two years ago.
There was a space of time (a few years actually) wherein I logged into the Acaeum Forums only very rarely and two years ago was near the end of that time period.

One more thing I should admit for the record.
my memory sucks.... I am lucky if I recall what I had for lunch by dinner time...

If all the variations in the wood grain horizontal vs verticel and small stickers on the variant sets of the OD&D Set is such OLD news (according to your post above TWO years old)  then why is it that NONE of what you posted above is reflected in the OD&D Wood Grain wording for the Acaeum listings?

Also when and how was it proven that the Pre-Publication Stickerless Wood Grain Box Set is bogus?
Once again... NOT reflected in the OD&D Acaeum listings.

Not "bogus" just spares circa 1975, generally with staff connections, and other remainders.

As to the Acaeum not updating, that's none of my business and pointless to bash my head against from past experience. Likewise for the "available at the 1973 Eastercon in very limited quantities" statement. (And in that context "given to Tactical Studies Rules staffers at the time" is clearly impossible for the staff in question).

ok, in the Woodgrain info posted here there is a small paragraph about:

---
The Reference Sheets booklet (actually, just loose pages stapled together), was exclusively available in the Original D&D Set.  Nearly every set we've heard about has a booklet with varying pages, from 6 to 12; as far as we know, each printing has the same info, only differing in format and number of pages.
---

I have 6 pages, folded in half, with printing on the front/back of some and not others, and the pages are loos, no staples (and no staple holes)

The paper is the same as the paper used in the booklets and using the same type face/font. The data on the sheets is identical to various sections throughout the 3 booklets. But not complete "copies" of the pages, but various chunks of info from the 3 booklets.

So I am guessing this is the "Reference Sheets" booklet mentioned.

I had shown this to some others who though it was just "copies" of pages, but there are no page numbers on these sheets, so they can't be copies, and besides, very few of these pages are actually complete pages from the book.

Anyway, just checking to see if this is what is being referenced in that paragraph

Faro:  Once more, please?  It'd be great if you could restate your findings in as much detail as possible just so we're all on the same page in a current thread.  (I know, I know, I'm just being lazy...but humour me, as it'll take a lot longer to search through the old threads and will no doubt be less accurate when I do.)  Or you can send me some examples and I'll confirm the research...but those samples might not get returned. :D

ScketreWhisp:  With which printing did you receive these sheets?  I know there are several versions of the reference sheets; pictures would help.  Later ones have a page that acts as a sort of cover/title page and actually states "Reference Sheets" on it; I don't recall if early versions do as well.  I'd wager Faro has the various versions cataloged as well.

It's a 1st print Wood Grain

There are 6 sheets of paper folded in half like a booklet.

There is printing on the front/back of some sheets and not on others.

I'll scan the front/back of what I have when I get a second later tonight. But they are also not in any order since they are "loose" and not stapled and there are no page numbers (nor is there a title or cover page).

*nods* Even if not quite in the same manner as when Games Workshop started off; thinking that printing on just one side of the paper was the way to build a successful international company.

I am happy to see the amount of information being shared in this thread. I will try to compile it at some point for easier reference.

Does anyone else have info to contribute? I have been swamped with freelance work and need to get off my tuff to snap shots of my own "1st" print.

Any information gleaned will be compiled and shared here at Acaeum. If you would like official credit with your name, just send me a PM with your compiled information. Even if you do not have concrete information, feel free to just catelog what your woodgrain has so I can maintain a repository of information. The more people report in with info on their woodgrain boxes, the better the information will be for all involved.
