I don't think it was up for very long either. If it had been for auction, it would likely have ended higher (recent prices have been pretty high and rising for this item). My rough guess is this would have gone north of USD 1500.

Also: despite the seller's claim, is the silver-backed version notably more rare? I have seen more blue-rear-cover versions but the numbers are so low that I would be hard pressed to say for definite (perhaps someone with a deeper statistics knowledge than me could suggest what a minimum sample size for, say a 95% confidence claim, would be).

It wouldn't even get that far, because gathering the data is a selection-bias nightmare. It's usually said that anecdotal evidence is worthless (such as from a few copies of this item), but if a genuine study of the numbers is impossible, anecdotal data is all we've got.

The seller had twelve really nice copies of the early issues for sale.  I think they have all sold at this point.

Looks like they sold it for $500 and then realized what they had and then resold it for the $3000 price point??

Interesting mostly from a pricing standpoint… Challenger Basic items are not cheap anymore…

I can only shake my head...That is crazy.  To answer your question Tszii, no they were never shrink wrapped, especially not together DMG/PH.  They are clearly used to boot (see images 3 & 4).  Someone is going to be extremely disappointed on the buyer side.  On the seller side, Christmas came very early for them.

Who are these new collectors paying such phenomenal prices for TSR collectibles? That's what I'd like to know. Movie moguls, cast from the D&D movie, gamers that become crypto millionaires?

Putting on my yoda/cloud watching hat here, but I do think newer collectors are showing up. Collectors overall seem to be spending less.

Some items are selling out of the blue for high prices.

Some auctions have ended for lower than I would have thought.

There are a lot more items listed now than ever though. I wish I would have taken screen shots in 2016. There were maybe 600 MM listed at any time. I could wait a weeks to see a new GH supplement listed. Total returns for "Dungeons and Dragons" was maybe 160k results.

The 50th anniversary is in six weeks or so, right? Maybe it wont get celebrated till mid year. I expect more of the "wtf? why spend that for that?" to happen.
