I asked seller if the bottom of the box was blank white or had artwork and he/she initially responded yes it was blank!       .........then followed up with oh wait it is not blank!  Doh.  Thought I would check at least.

Yes.  The presence of the dice in the poly bag was also an indicator that it was not a true first print.

How times have changed....When I won the shrinkwrapped Mint condition Holmes 1st print box with the blank box bottom (owned by Brian Blume) for $500 at GenCon, everybody (well almost everybody; I can't remember whether it was dbartman or Rabbit67 who was bidding against me) thought it was a crazy high price. Now this one sells in the condition that it's in (better than most to be sure) sells for $404 and no one blinks an eye.

Original D&D Set

This is why some people like auctions. All it takes is two people who really want something and boom, you can get a price explosion. I would understand the top end price if the set was in nicer shape, but, as some have mentioned before me, there is some obvious wear. I'd grade this overall in FN condition, at what I would have imagined before this a NM price tag. You live and you learn with this hobby, every day.

WOW, your grading is seriously strict.
If that is the only issue with that set, then a 40 year old set of books with only staple rust (IMO) is pretty danged nice.
Great acquisition for the buyer and well worth what the buyer paid for this rare bit of RPG history.
