I suppose it's possible, but more likely that it was a frankenstein job by somebody over the years.  I haven't heard of anything close to this before.

Agreed $2.00 cover price is the first print.

This was picked up by the classified auto-hunter, but thought it worth a note here too. 1st print with no box?

Oh, Nobleknight, when will you change? Never. Keep on truckin' I suppose.

P.S. If you couldn't tell, nobody on the planet but Nobleknight thinks their prices on anything worthwhile is anywhere remotely a market price. :)

If you call Aaron and visit his shop in Janesville, I'm sure you'll get a cheaper price than on ebay.

I trust you're not bidding... ;)
(Probably not, anyhow, given the category the sale's listed in and their refusal to shift it to one of the "book" subcategories under D&D)

Third print iirc

Really? I thought that if there was no printing specified, it's a first print for the woodgrain.

Anyway, I saw this too late. I would've attempted a bid, despite the removed staples.

Yes, the first book (Men and Magic) would have been a first print, assuming that his answer was correct -- that was my question in the description and I think I could have been clearer about exactly where to look for a printing indication.

Faro's post above is (in part I suspect) a warning, albeit somewhat cryptic… :) about the possibility of booklet two or three being from the 5th printing or later as they have similar cover art to 1st print and also no print dates. The way to guard against that would be to ask a few more questions about the text on specific pages and the colours of the inside of the covers and maybe get higher res pics of the covers to make sure they are the right shade (although note that all print runs have printing variations).  The adage is here -- as ever -- ask lots of questions if you are unsure :)

Personally I think it is highly likely it is a set of three books from 1st print set -- one can be too cautious -- the three books look in very good condition and the guy said no printing dates. Shame about the staples. One thing I would have wanted to see is if they have been neatly removed and so you could put new ones in, or if they have been worn through with use and the pages pulled  free. … assuming the insides are nice, that is a good pick-up!

<   edited to add: faro! I have two (rather late) books for you, send me your address, I have them packed up and even some airmail stickers ...Scotland is pretty much classed as international from London now, right :)   >

Oh I see. Thanks for the clarification red_bus!

However, looking at the pics of the auction again, it seems that all three may indeed be 1st print because it still shows the cover price on the three books. The 5th printing states no printing number, but they have no cover price ($3.50) unlike the 1st print.

Aha! of course you are right :)   .... looks very much like a nice 1st print set then (assuming he looked in the right place for printing dates).  They would look good on display :)

I did not know this! Does this apply to the other various TSR boxed mini sets as well?

I asked seller if the bottom of the box was blank white or had artwork and he/she initially responded yes it was blank!       .........then followed up with oh wait it is not blank!  Doh.  Thought I would check at least.
