Being overseas in Hong Kong, I haven't seen our local economy in as much of a bind as the USA. But a fair number of businesses over here do have a lot of customers in the USA and Europe. So there will be a definite effect in the near term and long term if it continues.

I wouldn't worry about singling out gaming. I think spending on recreational items is down across the board (eating out, movies, video games, vacations, etc.) and I doubt any one of those is really worse hit than any other.

It's a pretty good time to be a collector if you happen to be in a position to buy.

Areas of interest/knowledge: Harn, WFRP, Ars Magica, anything BRP based such as CoC, Runequest, Pendragon and all their related games

I was looking at Gygax's World Builder book today. It was published 6 years ago. A comment by the guys at Troll Lords is that gold is at $240 an ounce that year (2004). It is now at what, $1200 an ounce. This is what does not bode well for the US economy (and thereby the world's) (an impoverished superpower with nuclear weapons and a combat experienced military, an interesting combination).

Do you realize what this means!? If a fantasy campaign world was created in 2004, the gold in its dragon or dwarven hoards is now worth five times as much!!! Strap on your armor, boys, we're all going to be filthy rich!

Of course, there's also a down side to the reality/fantasy exchange rate. A sword which used to cost the equivalent of 100 USD will now be 500. Could this hurt our hobby in the long run?

We should also expect to see more off-worlders here. Their money being more valuable, they'll have a greater incentive to travel across the planes of existence to spend it.

Well, the comment from the forward in Gygax's book was in regard to the actual price of gold in 2004 not fantasy gold. Offhand I'm not sure if they were correct. Was gold at $240 an ounce in 2004? I know it has been shooting up and up over the last 6 years.

My comment is that the price of gold has been rising and is much more of an indicator of economic problems than the recent sales of bulk lots of TSR modules.

Not sure exactly what you are smoking but it is sure to be legal in California shortly.

The last time gold peaked was in the early 80s, the classic era of old-school D&D. Coincidence? I don't think so. They don't accept dollars or pounds at the bazaars of Greyhawk, at least not back then.

All those gamers needed gold pieces, therefore the price rose. The demand sent shock-waves throughout the economy. People waited in line for gas. The Shah of Iran was toppled.

Meanwhile, fantasy worlds experienced a glut of supply. The price averaged about $410.00 an ounce in 2004.

Condition looks pretty used across the board, and not sure of the completeness
