There were some problems with visibility at least to the US EBay market with these items.  That may have affected the bidding and the final sales prices a bit.

The $14.50-ish shipping quote on each of the above auctions from Germany to the US, albeit uninsured, was a lot more reasonable than the vast majority of US->Europe shipping rates in recent years. Shipping prices have gone up a lot on both sides of the pond but the US has been worse, no doubt.

From the UK to US, wrapping both books into a single package with decent padding - should be 2kg or thereabouts - plus tracking, signature, insurance and additional cover (now only ~$375, used to be ~$750 ) would cost just over $30, so that about balances with the above example from Germany. Each book singly would be more.

What would it cost to send 4 1/4 pounds, signed, tracked and insured for that full value within the US? Not going to save hugely on $30, anyhow, I suspect...

I'm going to partly defend NKG.

Are their prices higher than market?  Yes.
Do they have overhead that the rest of don't have to deal with?  Yes.
Are they still in business?  Yes.

They are selling this stuff to someone.  Maybe not all of it, maybe not at their initial prices, but enough for them to keep going.  Hey, not everyone shops on eBay!

I generally figure that NKG's prices will be be two, three, or four times market rate (i.e. what I can get it on eBay for with a bit of patience), so unless it's well beyond that, I don't consider it a big deal.  (I have no knowledge of the particular item that brought this up, I'm talking generally.)
