Thank you! I have 5 or 6. My mother-in-law gets them for me from Harmony Tie-Dye in the Bay Area. Genuine Old School Hippies still doing tie-dye the way it has been done for decades, but they put their spin on it. I've got that Batman, a Darth Vader, a Paw Print, an Alien, etc.

I found an old thread at Dragonsfoot wherein a few of the original founders at TSR were re-hashing some of the old bad blood. I won't name names. We've all heard different iterations of the story over and over. It's an old feud and it really doesn't matter now.

Point is, it got me thinking how sad it was that some of them never patched things up before they passed on. I hope they are all able to make peace, either here or in the hereafter.

Probably childish on my part, but when you love something and it becomes a big part of your life, you want the people who created it, whom you admire for that creation, to get along.

I'm sure I'm not articulating that well, but you get the idea.

Anyone like/listen to Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats? I'm not talking about just the first song that came along, I'm talking about the song "Need Never Get Old." Really reminds me of what Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi were trying to do with The Blues Brothers if ego and drugs hadn't gotten in the way. Good stuff!

Just an observation from a gaming POV. My local game con is happening in a few weeks. They just released the event schedule, and I noticed there are no Magic The Gathering events happening. In fact I didn't see any CCG events at all.

I found that strange because they usually have some MTG events every year. And the local game stores are still doing tournaments all the time.

I have never actually played MTG although I was always curious about it. CCGs have been such a huge thing for so long. Is it petering out now or something?

***Edited to plug the local con, cuz why not? If you're in the Schenectady NY area this fall (and why on earth would you be?) stop on by!

It is slowly declining. These things have their ups and downs, and it's been a significant force for a long time, but they have stiff competition arising from multiple fronts, especially the game Hearthstone, an on-line card game. There's a good article explaining what is going on overall here:

Which begs an interesting question, are games like D&D and other rpg's evolving well(ie they will continue and even grow)? And before you answer, people like us who are heavily invested in the current system are least likely to see the future. Furthermore, most people resort to logic (their own logic) to arrive at answers instead of objectively studying data. Google is famous for allowing data to guide much of its decision-making, and the answers are often surprising. This may eventually need its own thread.

Truth is worth finding and life is too short to work for money.

My two cents:

The meta for MTG right now is stale, boring and somewhat repetitive - many cards are being reprinted and they are struggling with new ideas. C'mon now, they have been printing cards for over 20 years! It's hard to create new mechanics in a CCG when they've already done so many things. I've been playing for nearly 10 years, on and off, and have pretty much stopped buying cards and playing since the current block started. Many of my friends have also stopped buying and playing. We all agree: it's pretty boring right now.

But also remember, that videogames were supposed to kill tabletop games completely. Look at the current resurgence of RPGs... everything is cyclical. It's likely that MTG will somehow rebound again. There will always be MTG players - they have spent so much $ over the years, they will likely keep playing, in smaller niche events and probably less frequently.

Just as a note to why WotC hasn't been successfully in the virtual end of their game - it's less about money and more about complexity. MTG rules aren't easy - there are hundreds of different mechanics (assuming that people play older formats) - and take it from me as a software developer, writing that much code is no easy task. Hearthstone started with simpler mechanics so it was easier to write as software (plus, it was always designed, from the beginning, to be virtual). Hearthstone will only make it to 20+ years IF they keep the rules simple. Additionally, WotC and MTG is a physical card game and will probably remain that way. It was started that way.

From the news: "Stanford University scientists have invented a material that actively draws heat away from the body, hoping that its cooling effect could reduce reliance on devices such as air-conditioning."

What happens if you get too cold while wearing this material? Since it does not appear to be a mechanical device that can be turned off, your only choice would be to take off your clothes to prevent dangerous hypothermia. An emergency heat source must be located immediately, such as the body heat of the nearest person. If these clothes become popular, I imagine that society would make the necessary changes to what is considered normal, everyday behavior, in order to save lives.

Interesting... I could see it being used for bedding and (in a higher concentration) for wrapping patients who have a dangerously high fever. Right now, the therapy for that is an ice water bath.

Upon reading the article, it appears that this fabric keeps skin about the same temperature as if you were naked. Therefore, the cooling effect has its limits. It is constant in its effect, but it doesn't keep dropping your temperature indefinitely until you become an ice cube.

Apparently the material is super expensive, so just go naked to get the same effect.
