The most puzzling description that scotch reviewers use is "leathery".
Who the hell chews on leather?
How do they know what leather tastes like?
If they chew on it frequently why am I depending on their opinion about scotch?  :P

Smells are used to describe tastes... I know it sounds funny but you have a much more detailed and wider sense of smell than you do taste... with only like 5 or so "tastes" and hundreds of smells.

Our government run liquor stores retail a 750 ml bottle for $168.29.

About the same price (although I have seen it run for $200 - $250 per bottle depending on location).  I have a relative that has a friend that owns a liquor wholesale distributorship.  She can get it a bit cheaper than that but I havent pulled the trigger on getting a full bottle yet.  It's $20 a glass at pretty much any bar you go to in my neck of the woods.  And a "glass" consists of an ounce or so of liquid.  :?   It's damn near worth the price though.  I have a friend that has had both JW Blue and Gold and prefers the Gold so I may give it a try before buying a bottle.

MetamorphosisSigma wrote:That sounds about right for here in Delaware (or am I thinking JW Green?), not that I buy it. I drink my "cheap" Oban at $65 for a 750 ml bottle, and that only once every couple months.

JW Green is quite a bit cheaper than the Blue or Gold but more expensive than the Red or Black labels.  I cant even find Green in the liquor stores around here but online prices run about $60 - $70 per bottle compared with $25 for the Red label and $30 to $40 for the Black label.

Myself and 3 friends managed to blag our way onto the Hampshire Real Ale of the Year Final juding panel last weekend while at our local Octoberfest.

After tasting 7 beers we had to score them on taste and smell. The winner was one called Finished, from the Havant brewery. Here is their review on their own website...

Hampshire Real Ale of the year award 2009 / 2010 to HAVANT FINISHED !

This is a special bitter at 5%. The colour is that of conkers. The taste is of coffee and caramel derived from a complex malt profile of Pale, Chocolate, Crystal and Amber. Plus added Mollases. This is a classic combination of Goldings for bitterness and Fuggles and Goldings for aroma. Finished is an ale to be considered and enjoyed like reading the Sunday papers in a wing back leather chair.

   Who said the English are full of pomp and nonsense...

*rofl* Not at all overblown, eh?
Strange how the local brew here is positive downplayed verbally in the equivalent commercial description, yet gets severe flak even from the Scottish Parliament. :?

I like Oban and Springbank.  I gave up on Macallan with the 80's era bottlings. One of their distillers ruined hundreds of thousands of vats of whisky, blah.  The peaty stuff makes me wonder why people pay to drink something that tastes like burning bog moss... lol.

But, far more important...

The first drink I ever had was Bacardi 151, so my taste buds were fried by age 15. I'll drink anything that didn't come out of a bladder.

The first drink I ever had was at a family wedding. My cousins called it Romanian Panther Sweat and it was some kind of homebrewed plum vodka or eastern european white lightning. They nabbed a bottle of it and mixed it with slurpies. It was surprisingly easy to drink but left me with a hangover that I can still remember.

Hi,

just back from Spiel.

Its obvious that Germany is out of recession - it was packed!

I had the best show ever for selling - 3.5 was particularly popular, along with the always-liked White Wolf.

We sold roughly 12 or 13 crates of books, plus a large shelf units worth of box sets.

All the D20 books that the guy in Glasgow has have obviously been dumped across Europe - there were German and Dutch dealers with exactly the same stock, all heavily discounted.

Not so much for me to buy this year unfortunately.

So now to get the stock all sorted out ready for Dragonmeet!

Cheers,
Malc

Being a herpephile, I can tell you that in Australia, if it has scales, it'll kill you faster than marriage.
Erm, herpephile was a joke. I don't actually bang snakes. Not sober, anyways.
