One.

I wonder why you don't rip the other posters who break up replies and respond in chunks (which I happen to think makes the place more readable but have stopped doing it as I was asked)... maybe they didn't get your memo?

Mike - no worries. It wasn't the best posting day for either of us ;) And you're right, Scott does deserve the donation. I have a feeling from a few of his comments over the years (as I go back and read further into the annals of The Acaeum) that he doesn't get tons of financial support from the heavy hitters here.

Hi,

I'm really starting to get the impression that Wavemotion is attempting to undermine this website.

He really is just a troll in a pink tutu with a fairy crown.

Do not feed him.

Cheers,
Malc

I have a plan so cunning, you could put a tail on it and call it a weasel.

These are two contradictory statements.

The paradigm of single-editor has been repudiated with Wikipedia.

I'm not asking for flashiness, but I am asking for something that is updated more than once a year and doesn't have the organizational quality of an acid trip.

Seriously, the fact that you think that's insulting to anyone says a lot about you and what the fundamental currency of your life is.

I actually started with 2.0, but I am a different kind of collector than most of the people here, to be sure.

I collect for completeness of information rather than for idiosyncracy, so I'd rather have Curse of Gethin Abbey and a regular B3 than an orange covered B3.

I want every word ever printed: I could care less if Gary Gygax sacrificed one of his children and wrote the book in its blood or if it's a reprint in the latest dungeon mag.

What usually happens is that a find is brought up, it is thoroughly discussed, and then after a period of time when all have been heard from the change is made.

Wikipedia? You gotta be kidding. The multiple idiot, errr, editor paradigm there is a joke. Or you get what you get on Wikipedia, which are mistakes now going on several years in the entries of Gary Gygax, D&D, etc. but that are unable to be corrected due to editorial mischief. Sounds like a great system there.
Single editor can preserve a clarity of vision, and help head off mistakes before they are reported.

It would be nice to have more updates but it isn't my site.  I never have any trouble finding anything here so unsure what you meant about the acid trip.

It's worth noting that 99% of the time, Badmike is the one DEFENDING newcomers to the forum against unprovoked attack.

Someone once, defending their right/claim to post here, noted that they played D&D forever & so did not deserve to be treated as an outcast. Another member countered that newbies often make such claims, & concluded that it must be a sign of trolldom.

When the Acaeum drives newcomers away, which happens with sickening regularity, naturally the outcasts will start sites of their own. Hence, BGG's new RPG section.

No one owns my memories of playing or collecting D&D - not Hasbro, not the Acaeum, not anyone. If the Acaeum continues to behave like it does, it is doomed to sink into obscurity.

Mike, save your typing muscles.  The guy started bashing the Acaeum with his very first post and clearly hasn't anything useful to add.  It'd be great if we had a fantasy creature that described such a poster in a metaphorical manner, eh?

Seriously the fact you DONT realize it's an insult on this site shows a severe detachment for what we stand for and what we do here.  Kind of like going to a ST Original Series website and rambling on about how much you love ST:TNG.  You gotta know your audience, dude.

I actually started with 2.0, but I am a different kind of collector than most of the people here, to be sure.

That's great, hope it works out for you, but you have to realize your collecting obsessions don't necessarily intersect with ours. There are a lot of people here who also collect for completeness.  In most cases however we are more interested in the orange B3 than a promo 3.5 module (as rare as it may be)

I want every word ever printed: I could care less if Gary Gygax sacrificed one of his children and wrote the book in its blood or if it's a reprint in the latest dungeon mag.

Yeh, that's unfortunate, and it should make you a few new friends

It is obvious with the explosion of new sites we will get new visitors here. Those that understand what we are about are welcomed with open arms; those that drop bombs and beg for a whipping will get it.  Hell, IM NOT EVEN THE MEAN GUY ON THE SITE!!!  Other guys do that far better than I do     I've never attacked anyone that didn't roll into here with excessive hostility and pumped up geek muscles hoping to "take down the old guard" or whatever.  I can think of lots of newcomers to the site that have been welcomed and contributed in the last year or so. It's a question of attitude really.  And I don't mean "Kiss our ass" I mean "understand what we are doing here" and roll with it.  Sure your grandpa is an old tool cause he still listens to 45s and won't burn them onto a cd, likes homemade steaks on the charcoal instead of ones cooked on the $1000 propane cooker, and he fishes with an old rod and reel and not the latest computerized whachamacallit but what of it?  The old guy is still a hoot to hang with...

As I stated, go to a ST:OS site and start spouting off about how Kirk is a pussy and Picard could kick his ass.  You think we are reactionary here? Sheesh. You ever been to a military memorabilia site? The ugliest might be the comic book fandom.  Throw down with an uber nerd that thinks nothing the XMen did after Byrne and Claremont left is worth spit if you want to see some real screaming and frothing.

If you don't understand how tribes work and come here pissing and moaning that the site doesn't have bells and whistles, how can you expect anything but a beat down? This is a far cry from hammering down some poor guy who just comes here expecting to wax nostalgic about his old white box and find out how much it is worth.  I doubt you'll find any of those the last couple years.

Dave and I have solved our issues offline.  A case of he said something in a way I didn't appreciate and I replied with a surfeit of emotion.  Case Closed. I hope he stays. Kflame seems to be here for a certain purpose....can't quite put my finger on it...but yeh I probably shouldn't have risen to the bait.

BTW nice to see you again Sauro, where ya been? Sauro, RPG Geek wasn't formed by disgrunted Acaeum users, it's a spinoff of BG Geek and would have existed whether we closed up shop or not.  Its a money making venture with some potential and far deeper pockets than here and a far wider focus. Blaming their existence on our crotchety ways is missing the point.

I'm on the ropes!

On related note: we just finished our first session of Keep on the Borderlands today... I was on the ropes there too. Managed to pull through - but I'm pretty sure the third request is coming here soon.

Hey, Dave, whatever happened to doing that the other way around and asking if four righteous people could be found to support your staying rather than getting nuked from the heavens.

(Not that that's the best analogy ever, I suspect ^^)

Badmike wrote:Agenda: this. Now, saying someone has an agenda isn't really insulting, just noting the fact that some of their posts may swing a certain way.  I've certainly got an agenda, Zavoda has an agenda, King has an agenda, etc.  Anyway my point being you seem to be the guy who always posts when something is found "wrong" on the site with the "See, I told you guys the site isn't as accurate/up to date as it could/should be". Nothing offense about it, but tell me I'm wrong here David.

Sheesh... gotcha now, Mike. :)
No, I gave up on that "agenda" to /actively/ push for improvements on the data quality as presented on the site's non-forum pages many years ago. Thanks for clarifying; too many nebulous unspecified crimes floating around as it is! There's far greater general benefit for effort to be found elsewhere; not least on Wikipedia, for example, where it /is/ possible to make a difference with persistence and a thick skin. It wouldn't take more than 6-8 people here to steamroller through pretty much any errors that needed fixing since I appear to be able to do that in the majority of cases myself. For example; Dave Arneson's page, too, had many more errors before I gave that a comprehensive tidy-up, just about in time to prevent the newspapers publishing /too/ many erroneous details.

Anyhow; enough thread drift from here and not really helping, above. Oops...
Still waiting for the more complex correction request I'd sent through on RPGG to be processed, too. ;)

Thanks,
David.

What else are you willing to do if a random three posters on the internet suggest it's a good idea.  And, please don't answer, I don't actually want to know.  Drop the three and out notion and settle in if you like the site.

Don't worry about this site.  It will survive as long as a critical mass of individuals who collect, buy and sell scarce to very rare d&d continue logging into it.

Now, as to sites that appear to be designed to sell advertising space.  Dunno, don't care, not particularly relevant to me.  There will always be someone flipping burgers or selling banner ads.  One's about like another.

I've been another economic casualty, with an income dropping consistently for the past year. The last things of note I collected were nice copies of Chaosium's Perilous Encounters & AH's Wizard's Quest. In both cases, I won the auctions for $5 apiece because no one else had the money to bid (they should have gone for twice the amount at least). That was 7 or 8 months ago - after that I joined the ranks of the penniless. From the declining forum traffic in this period, I take it that many are in the same situation.

If there's an upside to it all, it's that the great ages of gaming have taken place in recessions: the stagflation/oil shock of 1973-74, & the rust-belt collapse of 79-83 come to mind right off the bat; later declines were accompanied by more games as well. Maybe society seeks escapism. When the Help Wanted signs go down, maybe the Adventurers Wanted signs go up.

I can't think of anyone who would pass the "three-people-and-I'm-gone" test, be it the at Acaeum or in real life.  This thread still has a slight chance of getting back on-topic now that everyone has calmed down.  Post or PM constructive criticism to people when needed; make the Acaeum better and not worse.

You haven't been hammered by bclarkie yet, have you?

Who the hell is this idiot kflamer?
This is mindlessly easy: If you don't like the site because you think it is antiquated, inaccurate, or not updated often enough, DON'T USE IT. It doesn't take a college education to figure that out (lucky for you).

Seems to be the case this time also with the emergence of the Retro Clones, et al.  Great thing about RPGs is when you buy the rulebook you need not every make another purchase, which makes them one of the best bangs for the buck. Hopefully 2010 will be better for you.  Check out the NTRPG Con site if you have a few bucks by this summer.
