When this topic first came up last summer, I was severely castigated for daring to mention that I'd actually played one session of 4e ... I've never been more embarrassed for this place or for the tight-asses who felt their worlds were crumbling because a couple of people who post here had played 4e.I'll leave it at that. Edition wars are probably better left to Dragonsfoot, anyway.
Eryops wrote:Which internet are you talking about here? Because the general consensus I seem to be picking up is that 4e has been pretty well received. Anything else I can say on the matter would be a personal attack, as the rest of your comments are just troll bait... well, on most forums anyway.

They play Gamecube discs, and those are pretty cheap. One of the major problems with 3/4/whatever E is the lack of imagination required to play or DM. Not to mention the heinous offense of calling it D&D. If they called it D&MTG, it would be more accurate.

JasonZavoda wrote:He could be talking about 4e sales on ebay. For example: ** expired/removed eBay auction **In the last few months the price of new 4e material has come down to the point where these sellers are looking to break even or take a small loss on the stock they have. I have no idea what is being said on the main stream RPG forums but $ speak the loudest. If retailers cannot sell 4e at anywhere near the cover price then there is a huge problem. If retailers can't sell it at a profit then they will stop ordering it and the system will not be produced. It isn't even necessarily the quality of the system. This is a niche market luxury good in a very bad economy. It is a literate game system in an ever increasingly illiterate society. It is a pen and paper game in a streaming video age. It doesn't help that 4e is a radical departure from the previous D&D game system. It also doesn't help that it was designed primarily to make people buy the new rules and make all their old material obsolete. With the 4e license agreement there has been a flood of extremely cheap yet decent quality 3e and 3.5 material pushed out onto the market. The DCC line can be had for a song, the same witht he Kalamar setting, all the 3rd party publisher fare good and bad is for sale for a fraction of its original cover price. In this economy gamers arent spending what they once did and when they can get 10 or 20 3e items for the cost of 1 4e rulebook, they are choosing 3e more often or you wouldnt see retailer dumping new 4e products.
