Yeah, the 5% tax isn't so bad, really. The $5 shakedown fee is annoying, especially when they conclude "Hey, this isn't taxable at all. Now pay up."

Anyone know offhand what the other carriers charges for their customs collection fee...? I have something coming UPS and I recall they ding you for more than five bucks. Is FedEx more reasonable?

OK. Well I am going to split up the $1,000. When I start working again, I'll definitely be a able to buy big ticket items now and then. I did buy a gym membership, a new computer monitor (the screen has gone on this one) and an intellivision console with games. It leaves me about $400. I'd really like an R4 (Docs' Island) actually. Troll and Toad have a fine one for $369 - but they are usually overpriced. If anyone here has a half decent R4 they are willing to part with for a more reasonable price, please PM me.

I think this is the best option. My wife is very happy that I have started going to the gym!!! And, while she supports my hobby, she may not have been that pleased in just giving me an old 16 page module from the 70s as my 40th present!

What favorites do you play? Mine were Utopia, Sea Battle, Football, and Tron (deadly disks).

I'm not positive on FedEx, but UPS has rather insane "brokerage" fees. If it's coming from the USA, insist on boring old USPS whenever possible.

FedEx has the brokerage fees as well, and they're just as insane.

I remember when my wife bought her wedding dress, it was shipped out of Canada and they (FedEx) wanted to charge all kinds of fees, and then fees for having to charge fees, and then, because they forgot to charge some fees, a fee for the late fee. I told them to go to hell and they dropped them.

With UPS the fee is based on the declared value of the package:

So under $20 declared value is FREE; $20-$40 is a $7 charge; $40-$100 is a $19.45 charge; $100-$200 is a $29 charge. Then the actual tax on top.

What has happened to me a couple times is that since there is $100 insurance coverage, the shipper declares the value as $100 as well so you get hit with the $20 charge. Then if you want to change the declared value, it is an additional $10.

So, unless the seller is willing to lie and therefrom gamble, then the buyer must pay far more.

Dont see the value for the seller to stick his neck out there.

Or the seller can really get stuck too. I had one guy who wouldn't change the declared value to what I won the auction for. The brokerage + tax was $35 or $42 or something like that. Since he wouldn't change the declared value and I wouldn't pay the brokerage, it got shipped back to him. Paypal dispute later and I've got my money but the seller is stuck paying 2 shipping fees (here and back) or stuck with 1 shipping fee and UPS will discard the package.

I'd use the money to hire a detective to find the green folder that contained my much-loved 1e characters (including Xaxaxe the dwarven fighter), which went missing circa 1982 or '83. That would be worth $1,000 to me ... actually, as the commercials say, it would be priceless.
