*g* Apologies; that's a bit of an old in-joke here, although how TSR managed to get away with publishing Boot Hill given the similarities without a challenge - almost verbatim rules copying in some cases, such as for hidden movement - is still a bit of a mystery to me. Different times...
The Bristol rules (Curtis, Colwill & Blake) were designed for roleplaying purposes and used for such; as with BH it's just not the same paradigm tick-list as utilized in OD&D. Not that that, especially as published, had a monopoly on everything people might later consider to constitute a "RPG".

The Boot Hill is mine and I have never listed it before.  I am just going by the prices that I see out there and the fact that my condition is so good ( you might have referred to the one that keeps getting listed for $299).  As far as the Arduin goes, the first time I put it out there a bit high, but its rare and hard to find info on value- it was a bear to find much info on it at all. I think that the $229 was quite fair due to the info I was finally able to track down right here on these boards that someone bought one a year ago at a midnight auction for $180.  The books looked brand new as well.  

Ive only been selling for a year, but as a long time collector maybe I am a bit too optimistic on prices- if so, the market tells me that and I will drop em.  I pride myself on accurate descriptions and great pictures as to not mislead anyone. I don't usually offer a true grade as I think I am too inexperienced to accurately grade stuff.

Of course I respect and value all the opinions on here, and I have used this resource for many years. You wont ever find me arguing anyone's opinion, I just try to justify my position and add insight and accuracy to it. I rarely speak or try and drum up business for my stuff on here since I don't want to impose on the community, but I just wanted to chime in on this particular post.

Tsk... multiple copies of BH floating around at the same price to confuse me, too! Not that I keep tabs that much nowadays.

Indeed. Don was very supportive of gaming on a individual 1:1 character basis (and mysterious non-standard dice).
The 1971 editions are scarce enough but the 1970 original seems to make first Chainmails look common: probably played to destruction, those few copies before the new edition. They held fire until the 1974 re-release to go percentile-based for that one despite producing the own dice way back.

Apologies for taking so long to respond but I wanted to get the item in hand and take a look at it first.  It did indeed stay within the Acaeum community.  I had similar reservations as others and wondered if the bottom or any other part of the box was split, how bad was the crushing on the right hand side, were there sticker marks or stains on the rest of the box, what was the condition of the staples and the binding, what about the reference sheets, why did the seller say the inside of all of the books was white when the third book in the first print beta should be cream colored.  Of course, Faro had to throw in the comment, "Thankfully no fake woodgrain sets... yet," which just pushed my anxiety level right over the edge until it arrived today . Even with all of these questions and risks I was surprised to see there were three of us who all waited till the last seconds to throw out our one and only bids and they were all within $200 of each other.  I would like to think that means we are a pretty calibrated community when it comes to assessing the value of things.

Here's the outcome after receiving and inspecting it.  The wear on the bottom right hand seam is significant but does not go through the box lid.  There are no splits and no writing on anything. It is clear something heavy was left on the right side of the box but the right side was only slightly bowed from it, thank goodness.  Hardly any dishing to the lid of the box.  No unexpected stains beyond what was pictured and no sticker residue anywhere.  Books appear to be unused, tight, with no staple rust which seemed amazing to me.  Reference sheets are all there and were tucked into the center of the first book.  The inside covers of the third book are cream colored, as expected.

All-in-all it is the most I have ever paid for anything gaming related but I am happy with it.  It did require a somewhat lengthy explanation to my wife who doesn't drink but decided to pour herself not one, but two, shots of whiskey during the telling.  I take the fact that I have not been murdered in my sleep as a sign of her support.  I think she is happy for me.

There may also have been more snipers than three. I am not exactly sure how the ebay system displays bids - but with bids at the last few seconds, as the price rises (fast) some bids that would otherwise have gone through but been unsuccessful (i.e. too low), will instead "bounce back" because they are now below the current bid (as it rises in leaps in the last few seconds). This happens particularly when automated sniping software is used as the chosen amount to bid may be selected several days in advance. Who really knows how many

yeah, any snipes that are lower than the current price, say at 10 seconds left, etc, won't even register and will not show up on the ebay bidders page. You'll only get a message on your sniping service that your bid was too low or something similar. You won't be listed on the bidders for the auction page or even in ebay's "didn't win" list under your account. I'm SURE there were more than three bidders
