I don't think it sold, unless it was an off-ebay deal.

Weird, in my watch list, it just says "ended", with a " - " in the bids column, but the seller confirmed that it sold for the BIN price.

I was on the fence about this one because of the cover, but actually think it was a decent buy.

No shit.  Both the guy who sold it and the guy who bragged about buying it.

To relate this to our hobby, it would be like a guy selling a box of various modules he didn't bother to sort through and the guy winning them flips through and finds a complete set of TSR1970's Tournaments, Daystar and Wee Warriors along with the R and RPGA series, all in shrink.  What a moron.

To be honest: (IMO) that relation is off base a little.
Not opening a safe is pretty silly as EVERYONE knows the color of money.
Only collectors like us know the value of a reare item.

With a couple of houshold tools, I could get into it in two minutes or less.
Of course you would not be able to sell it as a safe afterwards.
Safes usually hold something valuable and at the least you can shake the lighter ones and hear if something is inside.

Not knowing what you have is worth? Not the same.
I recently purchased a lot on e-Bay wherein the seller and his brother decided to sell off all the old RPG stuff.
The stuff had been stored in boxes inside a closet for 30 years...
The lot sold for way under what it should have as it included some VERY valuable items.
The listing had a single picture showing the items and the lot included two binders that showed almost nothing and the seller listed nothing.
It was basically one out of focus overall pic of everything tossed in piles on the floor.

The seller COULD have done some research but the guy was not e-Bay litterate as indicated by his ZERO feedback.
He was out of his element.
While the auction was going I spoke with him on the phone though and he was no idiot; Just ignorant, which is not nearly the same thing.
And my phone conversation did not get me much extra data.
Though it did clarify for me that two of the three core rules books (which were obvious in the picture, but somewhat concealed under other stuff) were first prints (MM and DMG) and the PHB was a 1st (with orange flyleafs)..

I sold only ONE of the items from that lot and more than tripled my investment from that single item (A VF complete set of the insanely rare Greyhawk Sheets).
The seller was of course clueless as to the value of his RPG items but most certainly not a moron...

Even I was not sure of those sheets TRULY insane value but was luckily informed by a couple of members here...

One thing's for sure.. The going rate on eBay for locked safes for which the seller doesn't have the combination just tripled .

To me, he was one of the iconic ballplayers from the 70s and 80s. In a career that was almost 20 years long, I think I am most impressed by the fact that he had nine (!) knee operations - pretty remarkable for a catcher.
