Another old gaming site has bitten the dust: snaggletoothgames.com, an unofficial legacy site for Sabertooth's Lord of the Rings Combat Hex Tradable Miniatures Game. I still have my collection, which is one of my favorites for what it is - a simple approach to fantasy wargaming, with a rules system not entirely unlike Chainmail (there's even a balrog).

Not really deserving of its own thread... But as I contemplate R-series modules on this beautiful spring-like evening in Toronto, I'm having trouble reconciling the print-run of the R-mods (qv our Rares page, 250-500 each) with the perception that there always seem to be a couple of each available on eBay - auction as well as high BIN prices.

Also, Rs and RPGA modules seem to be selling for increasingly high prices, especially in nice shape.

In contrast, say OCE sets which were undoubtedly sold in the tens of thousands... Lots available at any time, and the prices sure don't seem to be increasing much.

Anyway, just curious if you all had any thoughts, or maybe I'm missing something.

I've opened an account with the UPS store just across the border in New York to receive packages for me.

I wonder if anyone has any experience with cross border mailbox services?

Seems like a no-brainer given what intl shipping costs. Any feedback?

I draw the line at collecting... D&D beach towels.

It is commonplace for anyone living near the border. I lived near the Vermont/Canadian border for awhile and people just went back and forth. Not just mailboxes, they put in a walmart in St. Albans and people just crossed the border to shop everyday.

Just reporting back that it worked like a charm!

The border is a bit of a drive, maybe 300 kms round trip, but I had business not too far away so it ended up being a side-trip of about 90 minutes. No border line-up. The customs official waved me and my 'used books' right through.

I figure the break-even point was 2 packages... but it might be 4 or 5 if I wasn't making a trip nearby anyway.

Does anyone use an app on their phone or other tablet like devices to access the forum as opposed to a traditional web browser interface? Just curious if anyone has had any good luck using one and if so which one.

It was semi-interesting to me, and I suspect he knows what he's talking about, but doesn't mean I am going to buy new dice because of his research. However, if I need new dice, I'll certainly prefer Gamescience dice next time.

If you are referring to the saltwater test, and if I understood what he was saying, the short answer is essentially no. If you are referring to the second test he outlined (measuring the sides of the dice), and if I understood what he was saying, the short answer is essentially yes. However, the "higher propensity" doesn't sound significantly higher in my opinion in that it takes away from the enjoyment of the game. The net take away for me is that Gamescience dice are more random than the other two dice companies he tested, but they are still all fine for role-playing. I guess I am just not that into dice testing.

They guy gets pretty technical, but the answer I think is - kinda but not really. What happens is the die rolls will not be truly random, but favor certain rolls statistically over time.

His tests show that the Chessex dice, due to the how they are manufactured, have a heavy spot that usually ends up being at the 20 or the 1. The wiz dice have air bubbles that would cause about the same effect, but on random numbers depending on where the bubble is.

One thing I notice is that he didn't do any actual roll tests though.

I found this vid from the man who founded Gamescience dice. He explains (rather animatedly!) the manufacturing side of this in more detail.

I keep in mind he's pimping his own company - but his explanation does match up with that other guy's experiments.
