The Dark Knight Rises:

1) I noticed that earlier versions of the trailer said that this was the "end" and the "conclusion" of the Batman storyline. This one doesn't. Perhaps they realized there's always more cash to be made?

2) Anne Hathaway as Catwoman. Niiiice!

3) I believe I saw Angelina Jolie in that trailer. Baaaaad! Hopefully, she gets killed off right away.

4) Overall, even allowing for the presence of the odious Jolie, it looks like it could be a nice recovery for the Batman series after the really bad stumble of the last movie.

Prometheus:

1) Nice to see a new, legitimate addition to the Alien storyline.

2) Is it possible...this time...at least some of the humans might take logical actions in the face of the alien threat?

3) For just a second there, the spaceship at the start of the trailer looked like Serenity, and I was happy for a moment.

Watch it again. The words "conclusion" and "ends" both appear near the end of the trailer.

That was Marion Cotillard, not Angelina Jolie.

Recovery from what? Stumble??? WTF? :scratch:

The story was much better than the first movie. The actors were much better. And it grossed over $1 billion worldwide and is the third highest grossing movie of all time behind Avatar and Titanic (adjusted for inflation).

I was in the admitted minority, but I thought that Heath Ledger's portrayal of The Joker was no big deal and I was not impressed with any of the illogical and outright impossible things The Joker did. I thought that flying Batman looked impossibly dumb.

I was unimpressed with Batman's moral stance on killing an armed and dangerous madman like The Joker. His prissy morality resulted in the deaths of many more people.

I thought that Batman taking the blame for the death of Two Face was the final, completely illogical story twist.

I hated the movie, even if it made a gazillion dollars.

I really enjoyed it. Ledger's portrayal of the Joker elevated the movie from run of the mill superhero action flick to true classic (probably going to be the only superhero movie ever to win an academy award for acting). Ledger's Joker was so good, he was going to win the Academy Award even if he lived. Ledger's performance was right on so many levels it's hard to see how anyone had a problem with it....his Joker is grimy, evil, cunning and certifiably loony without ever crossing the line into bad camp (as Nicholson's version did 20 years ago).

Batman's moral stance is pretty consistent with his stance in the comics the last 70 years...no killing, ever. And the rest of the "illogic" is really pretty much standard for any superhero or action/adventure flick, unless you think the stuff Bruce Willis, Jackie Chan or Arnie does is realistic.

So far, Dark Knight is the best superhero movie, ever (beating out Spiderman II). The final movie in the trilogy is going to have to go quite aways to match it.

That's where comics get interesting. The morals are from outside the fictional universe, the censorship of the publishers in respect to the juvenile audience.

Once the morals are established, they've got to play out within the setting. The fictional universe acquires laws of its own, with gods of its own. Gods come & go, each new pantheon of writers/artists making new sub-creations which imperfectly follow previous emanations. So a multiverse of parallel worlds is established.

Not sure whether this counts as art imitating life or life imitating art, but it's fun to watch it happen.

Honestly, that makes a ton of sense. Most superhero movies have a lot of problems balancing "movie reality" with "comic book reality", especially with a director that might not grok how to split the difference. Just look at any number of crappo comic book adaptations the last few decades.

All I can really think of are the Game Day, Rewards and Encounters adventures. Some of them have cooled off a bit but you wouldnt know it with all the ridiculous BIN's on Ebay for some of them.

I think the key words are "lasting value and influence." I can't think of anything off hand 4E that has shown that (from a collector's standpoint).

Who's to say someone didnt think the same thing about the tournament mods or RPGA series back in the day? Not all the 4E adventures are shit. Just most of them.

I'm not the biggest fan of the Elder Scrolls series of games, but I do think Skyrim is the best one yet, having enjoyed (but not loved) Morrowind and really disliked Oblivion.

NWN as a fully developed game (original sucked, but expansions and other content really improved it) is more about the specific story. I think it generally has better developed and interesting characters, and the backdrop is the Forgotten Realms, which is as well developed a setting as there is in fantasy. By well-developed I mean there is a lot of material to draw on, a rich history, etc., love it or hate it. The game therefore, drawing on those sources, just feels to me a little more refined and detailed.

Skyrim (and Elder Scrolls in general) seem to me as designing for the sandbox, and for the most part achieving it. You can go anywhere and do whatever you want. The downside is that the world and its populace always feel a lot more empty and shallow to me, those details are glossed over or not important enough to flesh out.

Both good games in their own right, and I do think Skyrim is worth a look if you haven't played it yet.

I have Skyrim for the PS3 and love it. Characters are a bit empty at times and standard phrases come out from the guards, but it looks gorgeous, is huuuuuuuge and so far has a good story, with plenty of other things to do along the way..

I'm taking a few moments from my PC to breathe and type this message before returning to the world of Skyrim.

It's a beautiful game... really really beautiful...

Although they removed stats from the characters, I love the new skill-tree system.

Grug's comments about the background setting (Skyrim vs. NWN) are pretty spot on though. I understand why they specifically only develop certain parts of the world setting, but it would be nice someday to return to Cyrodil, or Morrowind, within the same game (if that makes any sense).

They have the background material for the campaign setting. Hell, just read all the books in game they make. You could be reading those alone for hours.

FYI - I'm playing a true tank-type character. Smithing 100, 1-Hand 74, Heavy Armor 67, Block 65, Archery 42. I'm working on finishing a full suit of heavy dragon armor [Current armor score 442 @ character level 33]

How do you set up a D&D game by forum?

Yet another guy from my college D&D group has emerged from obscurity, and we're thinking about setting up a game.

But the five of us are still separated by distance, but there's got to be a good way to set up a play-by-post.
