The Gen Con idea sounds cool but I doubt it will pay his plane ticket and room costs (from Australia). Same with the WSOP, 1K will not even cover expenses to get and stay there let alone play.

The Art commission idea sounds cool but not many artists will work for 1K and it's a hit/miss proposition. + There's the potentially long and aggravating wait time. + Shipping artworks to Australia isn't cheap.

So, and I know this is probably a stupid question which has been answered  already... is it the case that tfm hasn't actually sold a bunch of his old rares to NKG - they are instead advertising and selling his stuff (presumably for a commission)?  So, if hypothetically, someone were to shell out for that 1st Woodgrain, kynan would then ship it to Aaron, and he would send it on to you (the wealthy buyer).  And the money would move in the opposite direction. ???

Import charges might be a bit of a pain, too, if those are anything like in the UK.

In my limited knowledge of how consignment sales work, Kynan (consignor) would have worked out a deal with the NKG (consignee) and then given/sent the items he was interested in selling to NKG.  NKG would then have given him a receipt of the items and a tally of the percentage that he would get when/if the items sell.  I have known several people that have sold items on consignment and you almost never get any money upfront, only when the item sells.  And usually the consignee gets a substantial percentage of the sale....in some cases up to 50%.

I would assume that Kynan no longer has any of the items in hand.  If you bought it and then he had to ship it to NKG which then turned around and shipped it to you, that would not only take quite a long time but you are also looking at a higher probability that something gets damaged or lost in transition.  Not to mention all of the other variables that could occur:  Kynan could die, be in the hospital, decide he didnt want to sell anymore, get divorced, or go insane...and then what would NKG do?

I suspect Kynan either sold them outright to NKG or he brought/shipped them to NKG to sell on consignment.  You could always go over to Tome of Treasures and ask him I guess.  I dont see why he would feel the need to be all secretive about it.

Not sure I would ever spend $1000 (or more) on another single RPG collectible ever again.  The only time I have ever done that was for a 1st print PotVQ and I still cant believe I did that.  If I did, it would most likely be a Tsojconth.  I would much rather have multiple rares such as RPGA 1-4 or a few different Wee Warriors items.

This.

The percentage charged shouldn't be as high on big-ticket items, I'd've thought, and aside from being good publicity (in general) for Aaron this also allows a degree of encroachment into T&T's "marketplace".

Agreed.  I know this for a fact after talking to Kynan about it.

Well the percentage charged is up to NKG.  Whatever they take from their consignment sales, that is up to them.  Kynan obviously contacted them....not the other way around.  If 40% (or whatever it is) isnt ok with him he would have obviously gone a different route.

Not sure I understand why you think NKG would take a smaller percentage of a big-ticket item than a less expensive item.  I'm not a businessman but it doesnt sound like sound practice to take less from a higher dollar item.  Just my uneducated opinion.

As for the publicity aspect, I wonder just how much of a difference that actually makes?  Especially when a lot of "showpieces" are so overpriced that no one in the know would buy one.  How long has that Inverness been up at The Dragon's Trove anyway?  I won't go into Troll & Toad's prices on some of their rares....pointless.  When I see prices like theirs I almost always assume that everything else is going to be similarly overpriced and I usually go look somewhere else.

Rather less time- and space-consuming to handle a single $3,000 sale than 300 $10 sales, I'd've thought. Charging $1,200 on the former vs. only $4 for each of the latter and still have stock sitting around does seem a bit unbalanced and, besides, the residue of value minus commission still has to be at least a bit higher than the price on eBay/private sale otherwise there's little point in going down that consignor route in the first instance.

Aaron has a higher profile than The Dragon's Trove, too (but those are also "on consignment" so that's a moot point ;)) and it's possibly a bit easier psychologically to drift other prices up a little when you have such large numbers on the biggest tickets in store.

Mhmm... likewise, recently; agreed. It would be interesting to know whether that works out better overall.
I'd expect larger margins on smaller throughput - in the "collectors' department", at least - tends to work out better for the same reason that some people list start their listings at $4.99/$9.99 rather than $0.99 on eBay.

ymmv anyhow :)

Many more fine suggestions. I will be able to buy big ticket items in the future, provided I nail this PhD and get back to work. One day I plan to own a first print Woodie!

I may split this up and just try to get one or two mid-priced rares. I actually have RPGA3, RPGA4, R2 and R3. So if anyone's got an R1 or R4 or an RPGA 1 or 2 in reasonable condition, let me know.

I am considering spending a portion on an annual gym membership!!!!!! 40 is a critical age - and it may be time to arrest my waning fitness and expanding girth, so I can live longer to enjoy my collection!!!

Someone mentioned Australian customs above. I have just been in touch with customs and learned that they only hold and tax items over $1,000 in value.

Thats "declared" items over $1000 ;)

Also if its artwork over $1000, you will pay GST on the artwork and the postage...

AU$1,000 I presume? Good to know and very much more generous than the $27 limit into the UK (for VAT) with a $12 handling charge thrown in for starters and levied fees on the postage as well as the value of the goods. (Which is why the "books" exemption is a godsend and repeated requests to sellers to remember to label correctly as "books" not "game books", etc. Artwork, forget it - a package that size valued at $20 simply ain't going to fly).

Sounds like you're on to a winner (again!) there. :)

Happy b'day in advance from the "other side"!
David.

Does GST stand for "Goods and Services Tax" like it does here in Canada?  Curious as to what the percentage of it is as well?  In Canada, GST is currently 5% and the Canada Post handling charge to collect GST is $5.

Although it looks like GST will soon merge with provincial sales tax into an HST (Harmonized Sales Tax) so in Ontario it will be 13%.

Generally, packages that I receive don't get charged with anything unless the declared value is over $100.

Yes GST is "Goods and Services Tax".. it is like VAT as far as I'm aware.. its 9% in australia (although unprocessed food is GST free.. thats the only exception I can think of)...  I believe that if you mark stuff as "Books" it helps in rather than "games" as well for customs... and yes thats au$1000..

A few things here are GST exempt as well such as food (but not junk food).  There seems to be longer list of things that is PST (Provincial Sales Tax) exempt so when the HST (Harmonized Sales Tax) comes in to effect, the items currently only with GST or PST will be taxed higher.

So the import of books which normally on get taxed GST (when they decide to charge it) will jump from 5% to 13%.

I guess this is their new scheme since over the last few years, the government actually lowered the GST from 7% to 6% to 5%.
