Just a short note to long-time Acaeumers (?). I spent this weekend playing host to JohnGaunt (Brian Kawano) as he came back into town for the first time in a few years to take care of some business (get his old house ready to sell). Those of you around for awhile remember John/Brian as a longtime member here who dropped off the site several years ago after moving to Missouri from the DFW area. If you attended our first four NTRPG cons, he is the tall asian guy with the long ponytail with the voice deep enough to make James Earl Jones jealous (should have been a DJ!). Anyway Brian is doing well, just not gaming or collecting much anymore, and it was good to see him. I am hoping he can attend next year's NTRPG con and say hi to a lot of his old friends, I pushed him to attend in 2016...if nothing else he may drive here for Saturday and say hello to everyone.

I am hosting an old school D&D party and you are invited if you live in the Pacific NW (or are inclined to travel). Seattle, Tacoma, Portland OR, Vancouver BC, Spokane WA etc all are invited.
This would be at my house in Maple Valley WA (20 miles SE of Seattle). I have rooms etc to crash in if anyone comes from out of town and wants to stay (large house).

Previously I have had a couple D&D summer BBQ parties where a version of this happened (at the last one we had about 14 people and had 2 DMs running the sewer section of A1 simultaneously), but I am hoping to get up to 20 attendees for this.

What there will be:
1/4 bbl of micro beer (I have a tap & kegerator fridge)
Multiple DMs running 1e or earlier, or related simulacra games.
A grill available. Free hot dogs and cheap soda

The cost is free unless you want to chip in for beer.

This party invitation / organization will be done via evite so if potentially interested you can express interest here, and make sure to PM me your email address to add to the evite.

I always wonder in these instances how much of the work (notes, etc.) were original or how much the editor/writer had to add to complete the piece. Probably a sufficient amount from Tolkien but always makes me curious.

Hi, I read about a game online that was a hoax, or discovery, of a 70s sci-fi rpg produced some time much more recently. Can't for the life of me recall the name. I want to say Cosmic Encounter, but that game was legit.

Off hand I think it's Starfaring (pretty pink cover, it's all the rage) by Ken St. Andre with Met Alpha 2nd.

Wiki suggests that Metamorphosis Alpha was first:

Starfaring ... followed in the footsteps of TSR's science-fantasy game Metamorphosis Alpha (1976).

But Starfaring is the first Science Fiction RPG since they classify MA as

science-fantasy game.

However, www.metamorphosisalpha.com clearly states:

Metamorphosis Alpha was the first science fiction role playing game.

So you have to decide how you want to classify MA

Starfaring was first to be published regardless of Wiki', anyhow. Any complaints about the level of simulation could be aimed directly back at the example of play given in D&D, too.

("Published", of course, setting aside the apparently deliberate shove into deep grass than John Snider received from TSR as the 1:1 "RPG" level third volume of his game was already meant to be on the cards way back in 1974 per his letter in Supernova...).
