Homemade. The binding tape has cut the D off of Dungeons as a good pointer to amateur status.

Found this statement/response on part 1 of Gary's enworld Q&A (page 14).
I am curious does anyone actually still possess one of these 50 page drafts he mentions from 1972?

The initial 50 page draft of what was to become the D&D game took me only about two weeks to write--around November of 1972. After all, most of the material was drawn from the CHAINMAIL Fantasy Supplement, so it wasn't a real challenge. I then sent the draft around to a dozen or two of my wargaming comrades. The positive response was overwhealming, and from my own play-testing and the many letters and phone calls received from the other testers, I revised the initial material into a draft of some 150 pages--essentially what appeared in the three booklets of the boxed D&D set. That revision took place in the early spring of 1973. When Tactical Studies Rules was formed as a partnership by Don Kaye and I in October of 1973, we produced a military miniatures rules set as the first product, as that was all we could afford. Then, when we took in a new partner, the D&D ms.went to the printer's, so the game was published and sold in January 1974. By that time I was working on the new material thyat appeared in the GREYHAWK Supplement some considerable time later.

That's gotta be just a mockup that will be cleaned up in the finished product. I'm really hoping.
I didn't know Gail was sick. I hope things go okay there, this is such a mess I'm just hoping for the best all around.

It looks far too busy with all the interactive stuff included. I think at this point Gail is trying way too hard. Better to just get some kind of memorial up and if you want to upgrade in the future with computer chips and what-not wait until then.

I love the overly generic "computer chip" lingo! Just buy them in the store and sprinkle them on the memorial and voila talking Gary! A simple plinth with the bust of his head sounded better to me.

I couldn't agree more. I don't understand: Gary's head on top of a tower with a pseudo-dragon on top of an open book on top of a die on top of a plaque that reads something. All due respect to the artist, it looks ridiculous. The sketch could be described as amateurish or just plain wrong; this guy didn't even try. The 'computer chip' thing? Come on!

Busy doesn't even begin to describe it. First thing that should go is the head. Second the tower. Third the rest. Even if they exhumed Gary, placed him on a glass case on a pedestal in the middle of a moat, it wouldn't be worse than that.

I truly feel sorry for Gary. I feel offended by this crap.

I don't really like it either. It looks like too many people provided input and gave the artist too little latitude. This all being said, I don't know that there is any one concept everyone would be thrilled about, and I don't envy the artist trying to make such an intelligent constituency happy. Furthermore, once the whole thing is done up in bronze, and you remove the green from the dragon and the blue from Gary's shirt, it might look a little better...or maybe not.

It might be helpful, if we really want to rally and impact some kind of change, to give this memorial a name. Or, even if there's no change, to forever stamp our disdain for how Gayle mangled this originally good idea. I vote for, "Gary's Busted D&D Memorial." It says what it is.

I picked up tickets for myself and two of my sons to go to a marathon of The Hobbit movies at a local movie theater on December 15 -- all three films, back to back to back. I did a LOTR marathon when The Return of the King was released too. My wife thinks we're crazy. She refers to it as the butt-numbathon. Frankly, whether or not the movie is any good, it will be fun time with my sons, and with a bunch of other Tolkien lunatics. :lol:
