I was thinking the Roman story of the would-be father-in-law & bridegroom who convert to the worship of Cybele; also there is a current TV commercial for a travel website that appears to be inspired by part of what I re-posted above (the professor & the soy latte).

We really ought to start a thread for that.

Happy ending!  Just received feedback that package arrived in excellent condition.  17 days.  Not bad.  Thanks for advising me to go ahead with the transaction.

I believe in role playing games they can hop .....

DM: It is the wee hours of the morning and suddenly you are wakened by a loud noise and shaking of the ground ..... Boom ......................boom .....................boom............

Player A: omg ... It must be a frost giant ... (wets pants as he is a level 2 magic-user).

Player B: a bold 3rd level fighter peers out the window, vaguely sees something fly out of the trees .......... Boom (rattle) ...... A Dragon! ( his teeth chatter).

DM:  (snickers)

Please tell me that the PCs end up in the giant kangaroo's pouch, & are raised to be part of the herd.

BTW, it's been nearly a year since any sorts of updates on the Gygax memorial.  That flushing sound you hear may be any donations you made towards this project...

So, this will be a roving exhibit that museums can invite to showcase Gygax and rpg's?  Usually these roving exhibits charge a fee to cover their expenses, so it's usually not a big money maker, but it could spread their viewpoint or passion.  If I am correct so far, what's got you scratching your head?  Is it that you don't anticipate many museums inviting this exhibit in the first place?  Or that it's too difficult to share a rpg experience/viewpoint from museum displays?  Or something else?

Personally, it sounds like a decent idea at first glance, but I really can't see many museums actually interested in something like this.  It's just too narrow an appeal.  If they broadened it to the "world of imagination" or "the evolution of games" or something like that, and made rpgs one of the exhibits, it would make more cents and get more attention.  They could even partner with Hasbro or Mattel or some big toy industry heavyweight I would think.  Or maybe I am being too pragmatic.   :?

The choice of "interactive game based learning within a museum environment" isn't D&D, which Gary became famous for....it's a lot of buzzwords.  It's good they are highlighting Gary's contribution to modern gaming (which I assume is going to be focus on Roleplaying....or is it?), so they are going to have a full-time dungeonmaster traveling with the museum project to run games for kids?  Or is it something else?  Unless there is considerable attention on Gary and D&D in particular, I fail to see how this honors his legacy.   It sounds way too general and mass appeal to be that, from what I am reading into the description.

The man in charge, Mike Beall is a game designer with a decided lack of RPG games to his credit (apologies to Mike Beall, if I am talking out of my ass someone here please let me know) and what appears to be a portfolio of very "un-D&D like" games to his credit (promote empathy and pro-social behavior????).  They couldn't find someone with even slight ties to the industry?  "Games Learning Society" seems like something the teacher's pet goody goody kids did with smiling adult approval as the rest of us degenerates rolled the funny polyhedral dice after school and killed orcs and took their treasures as the parents wondered if we were doing something "satanic".  I am getting a completely parent-approved, scrubbed-clean image here that is NOT the D&D I know and love....

It sounds like another gigantic boondogle and another questionable direction and decison from Gail and whoever else at this point is in charge of the game company that never releases any games, Gygax Games.

I think GaryCon fits the memorial role very well. The only reason I remember my donation is the Civil War within the Gygax family occasionally spills over publically and reminds me of it.

Oh well, I think that Gary would have preferred his living memorial and Luke and the rest of the family does a very nice job running the con in his honor. If they keep doing that and are happy I don't care about my $40. Not that it matters, some lawyer probably has it anyway.

I remember reading an article earlier this year that said the memorial fund had raised over $200,000 so far and there were plans to sell bricks (that would hold sponsor names) to raise a another wheel barrel full for maintenance.

I'm not sure if milk can burn, but in the meantime let's enjoy the fractured English:

Health Warning: Reading this may damage one's mental state.

In my new home, we have over 600 channels, but none of them in English. We find ourselves incessantly watching two Polish music channels. These channels play selected latest hits over and over as well as a range of Polish pop hits. It's nice to have music in the house, but the downside is, you get some really annoying songs stuck in your head  ......

DM: You have returned from your recent adventure. Having slain the vicious ogre living in the cave outside of town, you are invited to the Castellan's feast and dance. Dressed in the fine new clothes you purchased from the bounty, you sit back and admire the scene.

A warm festive hall. A long bench to one side laden with preserved meats, fruits and wine. The well to do are milling around, talking and enjoying the fare. At the head of the hall, the Castellan claps his hands and says 'music!' Let us dance.

(DM Switches on some dance music of the high renaissance period for mood).

DM: A curvy local maiden whirls towards to you laughing, grabs your hand and pulls you up to dance. What do you do?

Player: I go eagerly and join the dancing!

DM: Just as the dance is about to start, a bell sounds, and the Elven Princess that rules over the clan in the nearby forest, enters the hall with a flourish. She lines up and joins the dance. You know this is a group dance where partners circulate, so your heart is aflutter as you realise you will get to dance with the princess.

The dance proceeds, the music light and playful. Colours whirl as dance partners circulate. Suddenly the princess, tall and slender, stands before you, her hand rested lightly on your shoulder.

Player: (Song comes unbidden into his head  MY ANACONDA DON'T .... )

DM: Do you do anything? Say anything?

Player: (MY ANACONDA DON'T ...) errr. I say it is an honour to meet you Princess.

DM: She smiles mysteriously.

Player: (Suppresses the urge to shout ... MY ANACONDA DON'T WANT NONE UNLESS YOU'VE GOT BUNS HUN).

DM: You wait too long to speak and she whirls away from you to the next partner.

Suddenly there is a rumbling and a crash. A section of the wall across the room crumbles leaving a gaping dark hole. There is a clicking sound and skeletons burst forth into the room and attack. Patrons scream. The guards leap across the room and suddenly you are in the middle of a confusing affray. What do you do?

Player: (Thinks to himself ... well that's easy ... F**k those b***ches). I rush over to my chair and grab my sword and attack.

Player and DM roll dice. The first skeleton misses. The player hits (Thinks to himself ... F**k those skinny b***ches).

Next round ensues. Dice are rolled. Skeletons miss. Player swings sword in an arc and takes out two (Thinks to himself ... F**k those skinny white b***ches in the club).

DM: Excellent attack. The tide of battle turns in your favour. Your next action?

Player: (Can't get the song out of his head anymore. He leaps up scattering dice everywhere, dances and shouts:)

Well I did a galliard with this young elven maiden
when crash came down the walls and them undead they're raidin.
I swung and I slashed and them bones went a flyin'
While the foppish little court dudes are a screamin and cryin'
The battle its now over, and I want a reward
Those maidens they all like me, yes I think I have scored
The princess, while she's pretty, is too skinny and cold
And the Castellan's wife? Well a little too old
That first lively maiden, she was a lotta fun
And most importantly of all, she's got buns hun
MY ANACONDA DON'T ....
MY ANACONDA DON'T ....

DM: Rolls his own dice and saves against mind attacks. Pulls his display mace off the wall, (thwack) knocks out his insane player, and awards himself 500 xp.
