I don't even send out my Amazon stuff without tracking. Both places will pretty much instantly side with a buyer unless there's that damn tracking number; it's sort of ridiculous.

Little did I realize at the moment that the last time I'd feel really good about being an eBay seller would be sometime in the summer of 2004. If I think about it too much, it actually makes me a bit nostalgic ...

Read most, skipped some but I need to say something here.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE just contact the seller first. If he's cool and apologetic, and issues you a refund on shipping then that is cool and maybe there were some extenuating circumstances or hoops jumped through that we couldn't possibly guess... As long as he is cool and takes care of you then I would say leave positive feedback and DSR rating accordingly. I go a step further an tell the seller "I'm about to leave you this rating because I think that is fair to the situation" then they have the ability to respond accordingly... Since sellers have no rights anymore It's the fair thing to do.

That being said,  somebody here mentioned the lame attitude of "well as long as I get my stuff I'm happy". This is why sellers like this get away with bullshit all the time. I can't tell you how many times I get burned because supposedly reputable sellers don't know how to pack collectibles. Not to mention all this shipping cost shenanigans

I'm getting ready to video a tutorial on how to pack and ship D&D books and boxed sets and post it on youtube... It seems that most people are retarded when it comes to packing things.

I sorta of agree... but I add a flat rate of $0.25 on every sale to try to cover some of the money I have to spend on Bubble wrap, Sleeves and backer-boards and ink and paper... it's not much for the seller and it's just little for me to cover those expenses. Beyond this small fee I charge EXACTLY what it costs me to ship... none of this "$5 for first item and $2 for each additional" Bullshit.

If I can fit the items a customer buys in a flat-rate envelope or box with adequate protection (cardboard flats, bubbles and kraft-wrap, etc.) then I ship it for the cost of the Flate-Rate.

I also have been known to refund the difference if the buyer and I work out a cheaper method of shipping.

Here is a quick update... the issue hasn't been 'resolved' yet, but it looks like it will.

I asked the seller why it went standard mail when I paid for Priority. I told him I was happy with the purchase of the modules, but feel like I got shafted on the shipping (both in price and method used not being what I paid for).

The seller apologized and told me that he has some new people helping him out and it was either a miscommunication or someone tried to save him money thinking it wasn't a big deal. He has offered to refund my full shipping price (meaning shipping would be free) even though I would have been happy with the different between what I paid and what it cost. He asked if he could wait until after the weekend because he has no money in his paypal account but several auctions ending this weekend that he will get money from, I said that was fine and I am still waiting to hear back.

I always charge a dollar over shipping cost, and I can figure out exact shipping here with my stamps.com account instantly. The reason I charge the dollar is for bubble wrap, tape, peanuts, paper, ink, etc., like you had said, all of those things are there and they do add up. Plus the post office is a solid 60+ miles for me round trip as well, so for me, gas is a big factor.

edit - just to add to this post, I have never had a complaint about my shipping or price. I also don't care if someone marks something up a buck, or even two... but five or more is getting up there for sure.

I've never had a complaint either but for some reason my DSR for shipping cost is 4.5... Totall CRAP!

that is why I have this in everyauction now:
"Please leave positive feedback, along with 5 stars in each of the four "Seller Detail Rating" categories.  If for some reason you don't feel that I deserve 5 stars in all of the four DSR categories, please contact me via email before leaving feedback! If you feel my terms are not fair please do not bid."

I also make it clear that I charge EXACTLY what it costs plus my 25cent fee.

So whay have I gotten to a 4.5 on my DSR?

How many feedbacks do you have? Maybe it is just one or two knuckleheads throwing off the total...

I have a 4.9 for items as described and 4.8 for communication... for shipping time and charges I have 4.7's, which like you, I don't understand because I am very clear in my auctions the time/charges. So who knows. I guess people want your item, but are upset you charge a quarter extra, so they still bid, but then knock you down a star.

The only one time I had a complaint from a guy was for some action figures I sold, they were worth about $100 and the guy got them and emailed to say one was damaged in shipping (I pack boxes really well), and he wanted a $25 refund. I told him I would be happy to give him a FULL refund and pay for the return shipping on the items, but wouldn't give him a partial refund and let him keep stuff. I never heard back from him and that was like 2 months ago, so I think he was trying to scam me and nothing was broken.

I obviously can't speak for all your buyers, but I'd guess it's because you don't offer a method cheaper than priority.

For me, sometimes priority is fine. But I prefer it when cheaper shipping options are available, especially for lower-value items.

Think of it this way: If a seller always required me to purchase insurance even if I didn't want the benefit that insurance would provide, I'd be less likely to be 100% happy with their shipping costs. The same holds true for the speed of priority mail.

Personally, I wouldn't knock a star off due to having to pay priority; I'd just have bid less in the first place. But I don't think most buyers think that way.

I will offer whatever the buyer wants... they just need to contact me. I prefer Priority... but if somebody contacts me before bidding I'm usually open. But i don't want to really advertise that because with Priority I can track and insure and get free boxes and daily pickup...

That's why I state in my auction that if you don't like the price DON'T BID.

one more thing (sorry to hijack!)

I state in my auction that I combine shipping (common practice I know) but I also say that I waive my "handling" fee if you purchase multiples.

You also usually get Mylar sleeves and nice boards with all of my stuff... that shit ain't cheap.

I, also, don't like not having shipping options (wow, a weird semi-double negative), and generally ask after winning if there are other methods -- usually the seller will say "yes" and give other rates, but sometimes they just ignore the question, and then they get hit with a minus star in some category or the other. Usually shipping because these people tend to just throw books in a box and assume they're "safe" because they're hardcovers and "durable." I don't ask before the auction is over because I don't care before the auction is over -- I care after, when its actually going to ship.

This is all fine and good... and If you ever bid and won my stuff we would have a nice conversation about the best way to ship and I would go with your preference.

The other difference is with media mail and parcel post I need to BUY bubble mailers or shipping boxes... Really... Priority Mail packing is FREE.

So even if shipping a few modules to you is like $2.50 for MM or PP I need to charge $.75 for the bubble mailer plus my $.25 it ends up being $3.50... that's only $1.80 cheaper... you may as well get the benefit of Flate-Rate with Tracking and the nice stiff mailers... which with a nice piece of cardboard in there will not bend as easily as the bubble mailer with a board.

Here's the thing, though: That's not offering. Offering is when you take the initiative to let the buyer know that the option is available.

That's why I state in my auction that if you don't like the price DON'T BID.

The problem is that if you offer merchandise that a buyer wants at a price that's otherwise reasonable, they're going to consider buying despite the slightly-higher shipping cost. That doesn't change the fact that the buyer may have a somewhat negative emotional response to the shipping cost, which may translate into one less star when it comes time to give feedback.

I see a difference in philosophy already -- I charge exact shipping whenever possible (that is, when I know exactly what it is, which is after it has been shipped -- before is just an estimate; if I overcharged, I issue a refund for the difference) and do not add costs for bubble-wrap and mailers and the like because that is my cost for doing business -- it costs something like $10 to buy a roll of bubbles that I can use for 10 - 20 things, not even considering recycled shipping parts like peanuts and cardboard. If I did want to add a fee, I would simply tack it onto the minimum bid and keep shipping at its exact rate. Why? Because few people like to get an item that says "shipping was $5" and know they paid $10 for it; they forget it was "packing materials" when that stuff should be assumed already.

Oh, and tracking can be done with anything, as far as I can tell -- even international (though that is extremely expensive.) Domestically, it is freely included when I ship out, again, my protection and cost of doing business. It's a whole .65 or .75 cents. Granted, if you sell a single $1 item, you're not making much, but you weren't at $1 either. And, it makes the customer feel more secure, I think.

Then again, I don't do this stuff for real money -- it is not a "business" to me. Just a way to clear out some stuff I don't need.

As a seller, I get what you're saying. Priority is certainly very convenient for the seller. But the stars don't rate what's convenient for the seller; they rate what's convenient for the buyer.

So even if shipping a few modules to you is like $2.50 for MM or PP I need to charge $.75 for the bubble mailer plus my $.25 it ends up being $3.50... that's only $1.80 cheaper...

But spin that from the buyer's perspective: Priority is 50% more expensive than MM/PP.

you may as well get the benefit of Flate-Rate with Tracking and the nice stiff mailers... which with a nice piece of cardboard in there will not bend as easily as the bubble mailer with a board.

Here's a thought: Offer MM/PP (in additional to priority), but do all the actual shipping via priority. Raise your starting bid amount by the difference plus a little extra to cover the higher fees.

In the long run, you'll make a little less per item, but you'll still get the convenience you want, and I think your DSRs will improve.

It may not seem fair, but ultimately buyers want sellers to bend over backward for them. If you're sacrificing your buyers' options in order to make your own life easier, then buyers will feel that and it will translate into lower ratings.

So, really I just see my Flat-Rate of $5.20 as being "what it is" I price most of my stuff pretty cheap and I waive most fees when I can ( I say this in my auctions) Really the only time you get charged the 25cents is when you buy one item... and in the case of most of my higher priced items I have them set up with "or best offer" And I usually take reasonable offers.

It says right under the place where you bid, clear as day that the shipping is $5.20 (for a module) and if you buy two or three of my modules shipping will be $4.95 until I have to put it in the next size box which is $10.95 (still no fees for packing)

On another note... I just tried to pay for shipping for a French customer and Priority Flat-Rate is the cheapest way to ship ($12.95) even if I wanted to ship it for less I couldn't... AND paypal doesn't even have any other options but Express mail...

And just to illustrate how meticulous I am I have the item (4th print DM screen) in a Gerber 8.75" mylar sleeve... then that is in a 9" Gerber Sleeve with TWO Gerber Half-Backs, one on either side, to protect against gauges and bending...

I've even been known to add insurance and not even charge for it... Just to be safe.

All I ask in return is CONTACT before leaving me anything less than a DSR of 5... because if you are unhappy I will usually make good by either a partial or full refund on shipping.

I guess my point is that one should always contact the buyer before leaving negative feedback or low DSRs... because in the end, with me at least, you will get cash back... which is worth more to you I hope than the satisfaction of leaving negative feedback or a 4 on shipping.

You cant win on DSRs. Ebay has made sure to screw the sellers by making buyers believe that anything better than 3 stars means good service, where-as sellers know that anything less than 5 stars means ebay penalizes you.

When I was getting about 300 feedback a month and shipping next day with free shipping my DSR was 4.8 for shipping costs and 4.8 for shipping time. There was absolutely no way that I could ship cheaper (It was freaking free!) and no way to ship faster unless the buyer wanted to pay for priority. When I started charging for shipping my DSR actually went up to 4.9
