My vote has to go to Blackmoor. Sorry, sorry, I like Eldritch Wizardry as much as the next guy but the Temple of the Frog pretty much secured it for me. And as the DA-series of modules were some of my favorite both to read and play, this just clinches it.

One more for Blackmoor.

We're in the same boat ... perhaps I should say in the same swamp.

I think the DA-series was my favorite to DM, although the A-series comes in a close second.

My players' favorites were the A-series and S-2.

I'll tell you what got me as far as the DA-series goes. I bought DA1 - Adventures in Blackmoor because of the really weird war machine-thing depicted on the cover (it was shrinkwrapped at KayBee toys, and I was all of 11 I think, so looks were everything). At the same time, I also bought DA3 - City of the Gods, X6 - Quagmire and CM4 - Earthshaker! Mom let me get all four of them because they were on clearance 2/$5 (how on earth do I remember this, but I can't remember where I put down my can of Dr Pepper an hour ago??). As an 11-12 year old, Earthshaker and City of the Gods really hit the top of my list as far as fun reading went. Quagmire was OK, but I really didn't know what to think of Adventures in Blackmoor. I mean...it was just...an Inn. With some time travel stuff thrown in. And I couldn't find that neat war machine anywhere inside. So I put that one aside.

A couple years later, I was looking through my collection, saw it, and pulled it out again to read. And man, I was blown away. To an 11-year old, the Comeback Inn wasn't nearly as cool as a huge steam-and-coal-driven giant. To the fourteen year-old who re-opened that book, though, the Comeback Inn became one of the COOLEST things I had ever seen. Hepath Nun's suicide note alone was worth the price of admission - that's got to be one of the top 10 best monologues I've ever read, and I even memorized it and delivered it for my Speech class my sophomore year.

So yeah...Blackmoor rocks my world, and DA-1 sits as one of my favorite modules of all time. I've yet to see anything from 3E that comes close to that level of writing and immersion.

I'd been using the Blackmoor supplement and Temple of the Frog "module" for years as a springboard to the rest of my "world". My campaign was based on the ideas that Asimov used for the Foundation novels (a collapsing empire, two Foundations for eventually restoring civilization, the "Mule", etc), with a some HPL thrown in for good measure.

I placed one of my Foundations in Lake Gloomy, and had the PCs play there a good bit of the time.

Someone in my group got some Blackmoor material (I don't know if it was from GenCon or some magazine article or what) but I distinctly remember some additional information that we had on hand back in the early to mid-80s before DA1-4 came out.

When DA1-4 finally did get published it turned out to be the final campaign for me and my players. We'd always been science fiction fans, so the themes in the modules were particularly intriguing for us (we'd likewise enjoyed Expedition to the Barrier Peaks years before).

We'd all graduated college by then, and were out getting jobs, married, imprisoned ... but I repeat myself.

Anyway, I have fond memories of DA1-4. It's been ~18 years since that campaign. I often wonder whether we'll ever have another one.

The criticism I hear most often about 3E is that combat is tedious and/or time-consuming. Since I haven't played, I can't speak from experience, but if that's true, I'll be seriously tempted to either play 1E or C&C (if I actually get to play again).

I'm a fairly avid 3e player. Comabt can be time-consuming if the DM lets it. It often becomes a case of "Can I do this?" "Well, let's look it up and see," which to me bogs it down too much. When I DM, I tell the players to figure out their actions ahead of time, so when it's their turn, they can do their action without too much fuss. If they're indecisive, I only give them a few seconds to make up their minds. When I played a wizard, I have my spells on note cards so I wouldn't have to look in the books to find the effects.
