I am not sure why Tom Wham would simply be excluded, either. If the goal of this project is to produce old school limited edition art, I think Wham is a perfectly acceptable choice. He is as old school as it gets - at least compared to those on the list. I like his work. To me, a grand piece specifically for this project, would be compelling. When I flip through old D&D products and see a Wham piece, a smile almost always crosses my face. There is something about it that takes me back. When I see an Elmore piece, I see a grand illustration with incredible detail. It rarely makes me smile.
Now if the focus of this project has drifted from old school to artsy, well, Wham is out. Of course he can't compare to Elmore, Caldwell, etc. I assume that is why Fred F. was added. I have no idea how he fits the old school mantra, but so be it. I do not consider late generation 2nd Ed. AD&D art very old school. In fact, I find most of it to be commercialized art.
My personal preference is a piece that invokes the game from the early days. I like the nostalgia of the game. That does not mean I hate the Elmore/Easely/Parkinson art phase. But to me, that is not as classic as Sutherland/Trampier/Jaquays/Darlene/Otus/Willingham/etc. I am sure I am drawing a fine distinction, but there it is, anyway. There was a transition from one "style" of D&D art to another. As the game expanded and grew, the "level" of art changed with it.
As I voted, I am in regardless.

And I could've bought these damn modules off the 1$ rack!!!

For early color artwork Willingham would be our 1st choice, Dee would be 2nd. Darlene and Wham while we love their artwork are mainly known for b&w artwork and I think they really want a color print. We picked Fields because his art is outstanding, just take a look at his western/indian paintings on his website. Trying to keep the print cost down will bring more people into the project so if we could get Willingham or Dee that would be great.

Available now from Die Cast Games: Night of the Black Swords by Allen Hammack (Author of C2-The Ghost Tower of Inverness) with artwork by Jeff Easley and Diesel.

My first choice would be Clyde Caldwell, even knowing it would cost more.  He was my favorite artist when I was a kid.

I'll happily back the project regardless of the final choice though.

The art committee does have to go with what would be considered mass appeal, as we have to sell 65+ of these.  It was our feeling that while Wham had a certain cachet and definitely a fan club (I love his games especially Search for the Emperor's Treasure, which is one of my all-time favorites), he just wasn't a fitting subject for the art project. Personally I'm not interested in a large Wham piece for my wall, and since I'm not being paid I would find it difficult to work the time I have to for an artists whose print I wouldn't display (or perhaps even buy).

My personal preferences would be the "heroic" fantasy type artwork that often graced the covers of Dragon Magazine or modules.  While Fields and DTerlizzi are excellent and above average artists I also don't associate them with "old school" type projects, and I understand Fields work is very, very expensive to purchase or commision (as in "break the bank" expensive", so inquiries to him might be moot anyway).

In general, the committee reached an impasse in that there are really a very small handful of artists left to choose from that evoke the "old school" standard, and rather than keep going round and round we thought it was better to see what other opinions might be.

Personally, I'm a huge Tim Truman fan and the fact he's now accepting commissions for the first time in decades got me excited, but from inquiries here and else where it seems no one remembers who he is, what he did, or have much of an interest (baffling to me, honestly).  Again, we have to get 65+ collectors to put out the dough, so we are stuck doing artists we hope the majority of people here are familiar and interested in, which doesn't seem to be the case with Truman (or Wham). Willingham is another of my favorites but is probably even LESS remembered than those two and did most of his TSR work out of the fantasy genre.

Also, this list is by no means exhaustive, some artists that are still active might have been discarded for various reasons (for example, being extremely difficult to work with) that people might not know about, so a few names that you might have expected to see we have already considered and rejected due to reasons we cannot elaborate.

There are a lot of things the committee is considering, and we've been fortunate so far to find two excellent, old-school artists that appeal to art collectors and have not been too expensive.  Now we are considering artists that are; 1) expensive, 2) not as widely appreciated as skilled artists, or 3) not having as much old-school cred.  So, we decided to use a poll to try and see who all the artists were that could garner massive (60+) support knowing that some of them were expensive.

Unfortunately, this poll-thread is largely failing in two ways.  First, people are voting for the artist (singular) they like the best which is not what we asked.  Second, this thread is being used to talk about which artists people like the best which is something we could argue about all year long.  I apologize for not making this poll-thread clearer.  Still, I say we keep the thread running as see what information it produces.  Maybe we'll get lucky and find sixty people who support at least one of these artists, and then we'll have a much clearer path to follow.   8)

Yeah, a picture like this doesn't belong on the wall of a serious D&D collector. I'm just glad I'm not a serious collector.

I agree that this stuff is very subjective,  I admit I was very young (and not born when the earliest incarnations of D&D came out) but there are a number of solidly good choices here.  While I grew up on the Elmore, Easley, Parkinson, Caldwell, etc. era, I have grown to appreciate other artists from the earlier eras in and have since learned about many other artists regarding their careers since visiting here.  I cast my votes and am thankful for the options.  The only things I may say are this...

1.) I wasn't a member here when the Erol Otus print was offered and therefore missed that one, but I don't know how long it took from initial commission to final fruition/shipment.  I do know that the Easley one (which I did get) was delayed quite a bit and finally came together and was shipped and I was pleased.  I only squeaked in at the end and was able to get one.  It MAY be that whoever is next does this very quickly and the turnaround is much faster which could lead to...

2.) Whoever is selected gets this done faster which makes us all happy to have gotten in on it and then opens up the door to Acaeum limited print #4 which can then proceed with another artist off the list which can then open the door for another deserving artist, OR....

3.) Maybe if it's not too much work, if an "expensive" artist is landed for #3 then maybe a "less expensive" artist can be commissioned at the same time to do #3 and #4 concurrently so two prints can be in the works and those who want both can get a crack at both, those who like one art style can opt for the one they like and skip the other.  Since art appreciation is subjective and all of us have certain artists we admire above others then the best or better of both worlds can be reached.  I know this option would be more work for the committee and would require more time/money etc. but then we can all be excited about multiple projects.  The upside is the fact that not all on the list are that young any more so it may be cool to get more of these going faster.  Either way, I am excited about this and would love to get in on #3.

Just my 2cp worth.

Or we could commission two artists at once to come up with a theme and then each one of them could take a different side to tell of the same story.

Agree that this thread has taken on a different life than what was intended.
On the face of it the intent was simple and to the point.
Problem is most collectors are not so easy to pigeonhole into doing one thing the same as EV1 else.
Perhaps you gave us too many choices and as you yourself stated; EV1 has a favorite, or several favorites.
To add to that, you invited us to add more names to the list with choice 9.

looking back on this thread more, wouldn't it make more sense to make new polls/split it into two threads? One for "expensive" prints and one for less expensive prints? Are we sure that on this current poll when someone checks the box "I'll buy a print regardless" that they'd seriously consider dropping $200-$250+ for a print? I'm not trying to throw cold water on this, but are we going to be able to get 60+ people to commit to that level? And a year or more down the line if that's how the schedule works out? Even at $150, I think it's going to be very very difficult.

At least if the polls/thread were split into two, that way you could see who's interested in buying a print comparing the less expensive artist choices versus the more expensive ones.

Also, you could fit in many more specific artists on each poll that people may check off (for instance Tom Wham or Tim Truman) to more accurately guage. I'm seriously open to any of the early artists.

Lastly, has anyone approached Larry? I honestly can't imagine he's going to have time, assuming he would consider taking this up. He's seriously got so much on his plate right now for the foreseable future. Yes, I love his work and it would be awesome to get him, but having him on the list could really be pie-in-the-sky, and it possibly takes away votes from another artist.

These are worthwhile points, and I'll try to share some reflections which may be helpful.  First, we may try this with two threads next time, but this thread is already revealing useful information, much of which we suspected, but was not known with certainty.  Even splitting this into two threads would not be ideal in some people's view for one reason or another.  I am not saying that my first attempt at an art thread poll was well-done, but it has been more useful than not.  Second, one of the things we hoped to learn was whether we could find 60+ people to shell out $200.00 or so on an art print, and we think this thread might reveal that information within a month's time.  Third, we have not exhausted all avenues of communication with Elmore, and plan on doing all we can to make him on of our artists if he can do it within a reasonable time frame at a reasonable price.  While that may not work out, we won't know that without giving it all we've got.  Frankly, I was surprised we were able to secure Easley at the price we did so maybe things can work out with Elmore.  Finally, in theory no artist should take away votes from another artist because the poll was not created to determine which artist is most popular but who are all the artists ACAEUM members would be willing to shell out money to buy at their corresponding (but largely unconfirmed) price points.   If we decide to redo this poll, I think my question is going to be something more like , "Are you willing to buy an art print from:  1) someone like Easley, Fields, Caldwell or Brom at $200.00, 2) someone like Holloway, Truman, Wham, Darlene, Jaquays or Dee at $120.0, or 3) both or 4) neither.  8)

At a certain point you get to diminishing returns with polls....you are just parsing the information into smaller and smaller chunks but actually getting less and less information....counter-intuitive, but that's what happens.

Also, for a lot of these people we actually don't know what they would charge....for example, I have no idea if Darlene would be interested in doing any commissions at this point for any price(she's retired, so she says) so anything in that regard would be a guess. We have an idea of what some of the others would charge (and actually have a quote from a few) so it's hard to break it down to "XXX artist needs this amount" when we really don't know for sure until we ask.

I'm in for a cheaper or more expensive artist! Regardless I want to keep my prints and continue buying them. I support the committee regardless.

Btw. I want to privately commission Erol Otus. Does anyone know how to contact him? I would be in your debt and would probably contribute to help paying for your print if I make a successful contact with him.

Thanks

Voted for Dee, before I realized one could click on multiple options. I'd be inclined to buy at a reasonable price (~$100) any artwork that y'all put together.

As an aside, is the committee committed to different artists each time? I would suspect many wouldn't mind a bunch of Erol Otus artwork on their walls...

Yes, for now.  Part of our reasoning is that each project takes, or has taken, at least a year, and many of these classic artists don't have decades to live.  We've already lost some great ones.   :(

I am completely interested in all of these artists.  I love the idea of this series, the artists, the genre.  I totally appreciate the committee's time and commitment to it as well!  In fact, I'm happy to help if help is needed, but I honestly don't know how I could help.  Still, if stamps need to be licked, phone calls made etc. I can usually save vs. fumble on stamp licking and phone dialing.

We have lost a few artists in the past few years and the math is hard to argue with.. the 70s were a long time ago. ;)  I actually feel that these projects are historically important for their body of work and for the genre.

I almost want to say that priority should be given to the older, less healthy artists (if they are interested) but, that might seem a tad offensive to the artists. "Hey congratulations! You're this year's artist, which means you should probably put your affairs in order... " :D  However; IMHO, if an older artist is eager to do it, but got edged out in popularity by a younger healthier artist, my opinion would be to give the nod to the older person.  Age has to have some privilege dangit! :)

So, I voted for the 'any/all of the above' because I love D&D art, supporting artists, supporting the group and have really enjoyed the 2 prior editions.  Also, mad bragging rights for my local gamer friends, that's nice too. :)

The fourth project has not been determined.  It's possible there will not be a fourth project.  Clyde Caldwell is too expensive.  There are many other classic artists loved by Acaeumites, but few that command the level of interest we found in art created by Erol Otus, Jeffy Easley and Larry Elmore.  It's one thing to propose an artist and get ten or even twenty additional interested people and another to propose someone and find sixty-plus people interested.

If the current committee members decide not to do a fourth project, keep in mind there's a few others here that would be willing to tackle it.
